Abu Musab al-Zarqawi killed in airstrike

Author: Admin  |  Category: Uncategorized

Thursday, June 8, 2006

The head of al-Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, has been killed in an air strike on a building north of Baqubah city, according to the Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki.

“Today [sic] Zarqawi has been terminated,” he said Thursday, and suggested the man the United States had placed a $25 million price tag on for death or capture was located through intelligence.

“What happened today is a result of co-operation for which we have been asking from our masses and the citizens of our country,” he said.

The leader of coalition forces in Iraq, General George Casey said al-Zarqawi was killed in a two-storey safehouse about 8 km north of the city in Diyala province.

Several aides also died with him in the Wednesday evening raid by U.S. F-16 warplanes, including his key lieutenant and spiritual adviser Sheik Abdul Rahman. Some analysts believe a US counter-terrorism unit, Task Force 145, was involved in the attack.

Al-Zarqawi’s body, recovered after two 500-pound bombs had blown through his cover, was identified through fingerprint, tattoo and scar analysis and head likeness. Al-Zarqawi, whose real name was Ahmed Fadhil Nazzal al-Khalayleh, was believed to be in his late 30s when he died of injuries while US forces gave medical aid.

The first munition exploded at 6:15pm was a GBU-12 laser-guided bomb that was shortly followed by the newer GBU-38; both carried 500lb of explosives for total cost of $40,000.

The self-proclaimed frontman for Osama Bin Laden’s activities in Iraq, al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian national, is said to have been involved in the beheading of foreigners, hundreds of suicide attacks, and an insurgency against coalition forces after the Iraq war in 2003.

It had been reported Al-Zarqawi’s most recent campaign was to create problems between Shi’ite and Sunni groups in Iraq with ethnic killings.

For the Iraqi government the killing of the wanted murderer is what they sought but it remains unknown what effect the removal of this known figurehead of the Iraq insurgency will have on levels of violence in the country. Al-Zarqawi was not the only person to oppose the US-backed Iraqi government.

“Zarqawi didn’t have a number two. I can’t think of any single person who would succeed Zarqawi…In terms of effectiveness, there was no single leader in Iraq who could match his ruthlessness and his determination,” was the view of Rohan Gumaratna at the Institute of Defense and Strategic Studies in Singapore.

Applause was heard as Mr Maliki, with U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad and U.S. Gen. George Casey, by his side, told news reporters “al-Zarqawi was terminated.”

Sources claiming to be Al-Qaeda in Iraq later confirmed that al-Zarqawi had been killed and said that they would fight the United States and the interim Iraqi government despite his death.

United States President George Bush spoke to journalists in the White House Rose Garden about al-Zarqawi’s death. “Zarqawi’s death is a severe blow to al-Qaeda. It’s a victory in the global war on terror, and it is an opportunity for Iraq’s new government to turn the tide of this struggle,” he said.

The US military also confirmed that six people were killed in the strike, including al-Zarqawi, and his spiritual adviser Sheikh Abd-al-Rahman The death toll is reported at three men, three women.[1] Some reports had said al-Zarqawi’s wife and daughter died. However U.S. officials state that there is no evidence confirming the death of al-Zarqawi’s wife and daughter.

A Lawyer Can Help You Get Your Social Security Disability Benefits

Getting disability benefits from Social Security can be a long, drawn process which often poses numerous challenges. Social Security sets the bar quite high, as a claimant it is your responsibility to prove beyond doubt that you are indeed disabled, but your disability stops you from doing any work that you have done in the past or doing any substantial gainful activity.

For you to prove that you are disabled and you can’t earn a living the SSA will undertake an in-depth review of all your medical records and history. Your age, your educational background and your work history are also taken into account. Along with your medical history, work history, etc, the SSA have strict rules that apply to the approval or denial of a claim. A failure on your part to meet any of these strict rules and requirements can, and usually does, result in denial of your claim. It is easy to see why many claimants turn to a disability lawyer in Knox County for guidance and assistance.

The majority of claims are denied:

According to the SSAs own published data, less than 30 percent of initial applications for disability benefits are approved. Looking at it another way; seven out of every ten applicants are forced into the lengthy and cumbersome appeals process.

The first step in the process is a request for consideration, rarely does this result in the claim being approved. The next step is a hearing in the presence of an administrative law judge.

Proving your disability can be a challenge:

After a considerable wait, often more than one year, you will be invited to attend your disability hearing. This is when a seasoned disability lawyer in Knox County can genuinely help. Usually the SSA will have a medical expert attend the hearing; your disability lawyer will be in a position to cross examine the expert, eliciting testimony that will prove his or her client is disabled, meets all the criteria and deserves to be awarded benefits.

There is a far better chance of you reviving Social Security disability benefits if you are represented by an experienced disability lawyer in Knox County. You are invited to discuss your case with the Law Offices of Miller & Drozdowski, P.C. Like us on our facebook page.

Electric vehicles can be less green than classic fuel cars, Norwegian study finds

Sunday, October 7, 2012

A Norwegian University of Science and Technology study released Thursday found electric vehicles have a potential for higher eco-toxicity and greenhouse impact than conventional cars. The study includes an examination of the electric car’s life cycle as a whole rather than a study of the electric car’s environmental impact during the use phase.

The researchers conducted a comparison of the environmental impact of electric cars in view of different ratios of green-to-fuel electricity energy sources. In the case of mostly coal- or oil-based electricity supply, electric cars are disadvantageous compared to classic diesel cars with the greenhouse effect impact being up to two times larger.

The researchers found that in Europe, electric cars pose a “10% to 24% decrease in global warming potential (GWP) relative to conventional diesel or gasoline vehicles”.

The researchers suggest to improve eco-friendliness of electric vehicles by “reducing vehicle production supply chain impacts and promoting clean electricity sources in decision making regarding electricity infrastructure” and using the electric cars for a longer time, so that the use phase plays a more important role in the electric vehicle life cycle.

The Carolina Hurricanes, the current holders of the Stanley Cup, will not be in the NHL Playoffs to defend their title. With Carolina losing 3-2 to the Tampa Bay Lightning Tuesday night, and the Montreal Canadians defeating the Boston Bruins to hold onto their spot in the postseason, the Hurricanes found themselves on the outside looking in.

The Edmonton Oilers, champions of the Western Conference last season, were elimanated from playoff contention several weeks ago, but only two teams, the 1970 Montreal Canadiens and 1995 New Jersey Devils, have won the Stanley Cup, and miss the playoffs entirely the next season. This marks the first time both teams previously in the Stanley Cup Finals totally miss the playoffs the following year.

Hurricanes center Eric Staal said: “The year went by so fast, it just felt like we were right in the mix and all of a sudden, in a blink of an eye, we’re out.”

Tips For Saving Money On Your Air Conditioning In Phoenix Az

If you’re like most homeowners, you could stand to lower your energy bill. Many homeowners are paying between $3,500-$5,000 a year towards their energy costs, and most of this is caused by the heating and cooling systems. Being that summer time is here, it would be best to try a few tricks to keep your costs down. Let’s take a look at a few simple solutions that’ll help save you money. You can get more info at.

Before you call a service for Air Conditioning Phoenix AZ to see what they have available, and have them deliver an ultra-large AC unit, consider why your home is absorbing so much heat. When the sun shines onto your roof, and into your windows, it causes heat to accumulate inside of the home. An effective solution would be to plant a few leafy trees around the exterior. The trees can intercept the sun and cast a shadow on your home instead.

Again, heat can accumulate inside of your home when features like skylights and windows are open. When it comes to windows, sometimes drawing the curtains isn’t enough. Instead, consider installing solar screens on your windows. Roughly 70 percent of the solar energy that enters through your windows can be stopped by these screens. If you don’t prefer screens, you can have window film installed instead. The film works to reflect the heat and prevent it from transmitting into the home.

When it comes to the Air Conditioning Phoenix AZ has available, some people simply use it too much. You could cut down your costs quite a bit by simply adjusting the thermostat. For instance, when you’re at home, try setting the thermostat to about 77 or 78 degrees Fahrenheit. However, when you’re not at home, or when the sun is down, consider raising the temperature a little higher. According to some experts you can save as much as 20 percent on your energy bill by doing this.

Use these cost cutting tips in order to help keep a little extra money in your pocket. Remember to focus on protecting your house from the sun as much as possible. Use trees, plants, screens, or window film to prevent heat from accumulating. If you’d like to have your unit serviced, you can call Arizona Refrigeration Service Inc of Phoenix AZ for assistance.

Australian government to tackle banks on mortgages

Sunday, January 13, 2008

In response to higher than expected mortgage rate increases last week, Australian treasurer Wayne Swan flagged changes to banking regulations to increase competition between lenders on home mortgages.

Swan announced yesterday he had sought a Treasury report on the banking sector ahead of talks over the next fortnight on reforms to make it easier for bank customers to move mortgages between lenders by forcing banks to reduce exit fees, to “make the market more competitive”.

“Everybody knows we’ve been impacted upon by the U.S. sub-prime mortgage crisis that has pushed up the cost of money,” Swan said.

“But, as I said last week, some of the increases we saw by the banks were not justified. In my view, they were excessive. I urge people to vote with their feet. If there are obstacles to people voting with their feet, switching their accounts, we’ll have a look at those.”

The banking industry, however, insists that loan refinancing is not a complicated process currently, according to the head of the Australian Bankers Association (ABA), David Bell. “There is a competitive marketplace for home loans and the Cannex website shows the many products that are available,” said Bell. “Regarding the switching of transaction accounts, the Australian Payments Clearing Association is conducting a community consultation process on this issue. ABA member banks support this process.”

Centennial of ‘father of contemporary Thai cinema’ celebrated

Thailand’s National Film Archive in Salaya, Nakhon Pathom unveiled a new museum and cinema on Thursday night for the 100th anniversary celebration of the birth of Rattana Pestjoni, a filmmaker who is considered the “father of contemporary Thai cinema”.

With Pestonji’s family, movie stars, filmmakers, government officials and fans on hand, the National Film Archive’s museum was opened for tours, and the facility’s 120-seat cinema hosted the screening of a documentary film, Signature: The Life and Work of R.D. Pestonji.

Pestonji was born in Bangkok on May 22, 1908, to a Parsi-Indian (ethnic Persian) family. For his first short film, Tang, in 1937, he received an award from Alfred Hitchcock at a film festival in Scotland. Pestonji directed his first feature film, Dear Dolly, in 1951. He was known for his skills as a cinematographer, and he shot the first Thai feature film to be submitted to an overseas film festival. Pestonji also pushed for innovations in the Thai film industry, such as using 35mm film, and raising the level of cinematography as an artistic element of the films, said film historian Dome Sukwong, director of the National Film Archive.

The now-lost Santi-Weena was submitted to the Asia-Pacific Film Festival in 1954 in Tokyo. Pestonji served as cinematographer on it as well as Forever Yours, in 1955. He then directed four features, Country Hotel in 1957, Dark Heaven in 1958, Black Silk in 1961, and Sugar Is Not Sweet in 1964. His films were never box-office successes, which led to Pestonji retiring from feature-film work to make television commercials, Sukwong said.

Pestonji died of a heart attack on August 17, 1970 at the Montien Hotel Bangkok, while giving a speech to government officials and film industry executives about the prevalence of Hollywood films in Thailand’s cinemas.

Contemporary directors who were influenced by Pestonji include Wisit Sasanatieng and Pen-ek Ratanaruang (Last Life in the Universe). Sasanatieng was among the filmmakers present at Thursday’s event.

Prae Dum [Black Silk] is the film that remains my single major influence,” Sasanatieng was quoted as saying by the Bangkok Post. Sasanatieng’s colorful features, Tears of the Black Tiger and Citizen Dog bear many of the hallmarks of Pestonji’s films. “Khun Ratana was not simply a master storyteller … he knew how to use color, art direction and camera angles to create subtle nuances and charge the movie with strong emotions.”

Pestonji’s sons, Santa and Edel, have continued in the film business. The Bangkok film production house their father started now houses a firm that hires out equipment and film crews to foreign films shooting on location in Thailand. Films that the company has been involved with include Heaven & Earth and The Beach. Pestonji’s daughter, Ratanavadi Ratanabhand, was the lead actress in 1961’s Black Silk.

The Pestonji centennial celebration was the first major event held in the new facilities at the National Film Archive, which moved around 10 years ago to the Fine Arts Department compound in Nakhon Pathom Province, about 50 kilometers from Bangkok, where the archive had been previously located. The museum and cinema complex were built in the last year, and Thursday’s event was the first major function held at the facility, said Chalida Uabumrungjit of the Thai Film Foundation, which has worked closely with the National Film Archive to preserve Pestonji’s legacy. The foundation holds the rights to Pestonji’s films and plans to issue a DVD set of his works later this year.

The centerpiece of the archive’s museum is a wax figure of Pestonji, seated with his prized Mitchell camera in front of a recreation of the set from his 1957 musical comedy Country Hotel.

In a manner similar to Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, handprints, footprints and signatures of celebrities are being collected in the concrete outside the museum’s cinema. That initiative started on Thursday with actor Prompong Nopparit, a spokesman for the Ministry of Culture, being the first to make his marks.

Other stars making impressions included actor Suthep Wongkamheng, who starred in Pestonji’s Dark Heaven. A rain storm dampened the festivities, but didn’t keep 1970s action star Sombat Metanee from making his mark in the slab, albeit under cover of umbrellas. Other figures adding their marks to the wet cement were pioneering animator Payut Ngaokrachang and Santa Pestonji, Ratana’s eldest son.

Swiss Screw Machines: From Watch Parts To Medical Instruments

Author: Admin  |  Category: Earthmoving Machines

byadmin

The manufacturing business has changed over the past s when certain timepiece makers in Switzerland created what are now called Swiss screw machines.

The Original Intent

Swiss screw machines were made with a singular purpose in mind. They were to provide parts for the Swiss watch manufacturing industry. Previously, the need for the watches was not being matched by the production of required parts. The watchmakers required a solution that would provide them with the same precise parts but at a higher volume of production.

Swiss Screw Machines Branch Out

The newly developed machines began to mass produce small and miniature parts for the watch trade. The employers of the machines soon noticed they were also quite adaptable to other types of parts. In particular, they could be used in the manufacturer of long and slender components. As a result, Swiss screw machines began to be utilized in the production of other industries. They were not longer strictly for employment in the watch trade.

Over time, the machines evolved into precise machining tools. The result has been the development of two different types of Swiss Screw machines. These are:

The Automatic Swiss Screw Machine – The type is often called Cam operated since it works with a disc cam. It also requires a collet to fix the piece of work in place.

The CNC Swiss Screw Machine – This is the latest adaptation of the screw machine. It relies on the advancements made in technology to operate it precisely and from a distance with little human interference. The CNC stands for Computer Numerical Controlled.

A Long and Fruitful Road

Since its first appearance in the 1800s, the Swiss screwing machine has changed. It has stretched its usage far beyond the original application – creating small, precise watch parts. It has been adopted and adapted for various manufacturing purposes. Today, it is found performing in a wide variety of fields. They range from aerospace to general metal working. Swiss screwing machines are here to stay. The use of CNC has ensured they have become part of an increasing use of the latest computer technology in the manufacturing business.
