A building being prepared for demolition collapsed this morning in New York‘s Upper West Side around 9 a.m. EDT. Five people are known to be injured from the accident, as well as one rescue worker who was injured in the aftermath. None of the injuries were life-threatening.

The building was a supermarket, which was being taken down to make room for a high-rise building, something that residents took issue with. The roof, front wall, and scaffolding all fell to the ground, as stated by Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta.

Soon after the incident at least 100 police and fire department personnel combed the wreckage for more victims, using search and rescue dogs to find people by scent. They quickly accounted for the twenty-five construction workers who were working on the supermarket. Most of the victims’ injuries were broken bones, including one person who broke all four extremities.

Subway lines 1, 2, and 3 have been closed or redirected in response, along with the M104 bus.

Wikinews interviews specialists on China, Iran, Russia support for al-Assad

Over the past week, diplomatic actions have averted — or, at least delayed — military strikes on Syria by the United States. Wikinews sought input from a range of international experts on the situation; and, the tensions caused by Russia’s support for the al-Assad regime despite its apparent use of chemical weapons.

File:Ghouta chemical attack map.svg

Tensions in the country increased dramatically, late August when it was reported between 100 and 1,300 people were killed in an alleged chemical attack. Many of those killed appeared to be children, with some of the pictures and video coming out of the country showing — according to witnesses — those who died from apparent suffocation; some foaming at the mouth, others having convulsions.

Amongst Syria’s few remaining allies, Iran, China, and Russia continue to oppose calls for military intervention. In an effort to provide a better-understanding of the reasoning behind their ongoing support, the following people were posed a range of questions.

UK company “seriously considering” GPS tracking devices in school uniforms

Author: Admin  |  Category: Uncategorized

Saturday, August 25, 2007

The leading supplier of school uniforms in the United Kingdom, Lancashire-based manufacturer Trutex, has announced it is “seriously considering” including GPS tracking devices in future ranges of its uniform products after conducting an online survey of both parents and children.

“As a direct result of the survey, we are now seriously considering incorporating a [tracking] device into future ranges” said Trutex marketing director Clare Rix.

The survey questioned 809 parents and 444 children aged nine to 16. It showed that 44% of parents were worried about the safety of pre-teen children, and 59% wanted tracking devices installed in school apparel. 39% of children aged nine to 12 were prepared to wear clothing with tracking devices in them, while teenagers were notably less enthusiastic and more wary of what Trutex has admitted they see as a “big brother” concept.

However, Trutex has claimed the tracking devices would bring about worthwhile benefits, including being a valuable resource for parents who wanted to keep a close eye on where their children were at all times.

“As well as being a safety net for parents, there could be real benefits for schools who could keep a closer track on the whereabouts of their pupils, potentially reducing truancy levels” says Rix.

Each year, Trutex supplies 1 million blouses, 1.1 million shirts, 250,000 pairs of trousers, 20,000 blazers, 60,000 skirts and 110,000 pieces of knitwear to the UK.

It is not the first company to manufacture school uniforms with a central focus on child safety; last week Essex firm BladeRunner revealed it was selling stab-proof school blazers to parents concerned about violence against their children. The blazers were outfitted with Kevlar, a synthetic fibre used in body armour. It has already received orders internationally, including Australia.

If the Trutex tracking devices go ahead, it is unclear where in the uniform they will be located.

Tips For Finding A Better Roofing Contractor In Oklahoma City

Author: Admin  |  Category: Property Investment

byAlma Abell

Roofing companies are being created all over Oklahoma to serve different needs. One Roofing Contractor Oklahoma City might only serve residential homes where as another contractor might specialize in big businesses and servicing factories. Occasionally, some companies will service both residential and commercial locations. No matter what specialty the roofer has, they need to licensed and insured to protect the person hiring them for work. Browse website for more information.

In Oklahoma, it is actually illegal for a roofing contractor to work without a license and insurance. These two factors combined protects the customer from any mishaps on the job, such as personal injury. If the customer feels any lingering hesitance about the companies’ license and insurance, it’s a good idea to talk with the contractor further about it, particularly their insurance’s liability and worker’s compensation.

A credible Roofing Contractor Oklahoma City will arrive on the location to diagnose the amount of work necessary to roof. This could mean anything from general roofing repairs to replacement of some areas of the roof. It might be useful for the owner of the residence to seek out a second opinion before hiring a contractor.

Some residential owners can even take bids from varying contractors to see which one has the better price. However, it’s not always best to choose the lowest bid. A low bid could be an indication that the team uses low-quality materials or that they plan on rushing through the roofing process to save time and thus money. Residential owners should search for multiple roofing companies and communicate with them before hiring a team of contractors.

Before hiring anyone, the customer will want to create a written contract with their chosen Roofing Contractor Oklahoma City. A written contract is imperative. In the past, some residential owners have simply hired a person to repair their roof and never thought twice about contracts. A written contract though only serves to protect the customer and ensure that the job is finished appropriately. A detailed contract will include the overall scope of the roofing project, a list of employees and materials used, and dates for the beginning and end of the job. NASA sets launch date for Space Shuttle Discovery

Saturday, March 7, 2009

After almost two months of delay, NASA has set March 11 as the launch date for Space Shuttle Discovery. On February 22, NASA had stated that they indefinitely delayed the launch of Space Shuttle Discovery, which was originally scheduled for takeoff on February 12. Launch was then further delayed until February 25 before being delayed indefinitely on February 22. NASA cited the need for additional time to evaluate the shuttle’s hydrogen fuel flow control valves.

Liftoff is set for nighttime on Wednesday, March 11, at approximately 9:20 p.m. (EST) from Launch Complex 39A in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The official countdown to launch will commence Sunday, March 8.

“The team came through, worked hard and was efficient. It’s time now to step back and think of everything else we need to watch before launch on the 11th. There’s no better team than this one and I thank them for putting the right analysis together,” said Bill Gerstenmaier, associate administrator for Space Operations at NASA.

NASA wanted to perform additional tests on the valves which control the amount of hydrogen fuel pumped into the external tank when the shuttle is taking off before making a decision to launch. When Space Shuttle Endeavour went into space in November 2008, one of the valves broke. NASA fears that if one breaks off on this mission, then it could damage the outside of the shuttle.

The current scheduled mission, STS-119, is set to fly the Integrated Truss Structure segment (“S” for starboard, the right side of the station, and “6” for its place at the very end of the starboard truss) and install the final set of power-generating solar arrays to the International Space Station. The arrays consist of two 115-foot-long arrays, for a total wing span of 240 feet, including the equipment that connects the two halves and allows them to twist as they track the sun. Altogether, the four sets of arrays can generate 84 to 120 kilowatts of electricity – enough to provide power for more than 40 average homes.

Commander Lee Archambault will lead Discovery’s crew of seven, along with Pilot Tony Antonelli, and Mission Specialists Joseph Acaba, John Phillips, Steve Swanson, Richard Arnold, and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Koichi Wakata.

NHL: Vancouver Canucks showcase new uniform

The Vancouver Canucks, hockey team to Vancouver, British Columbia, unveiled it’s new home and away uniforms today. Keeping the trade-mark Orca, the jersey has remixed the colors as well as adding a green stripe for both the home and away uniforms. This is the 5th jersey the team has gone through since 1970 when the team was founded.

The redesign has been met with some criticisms. John Carter a graphics arts instructor at a local college was quoted as calling the redesign an “utter disappointment.”

The design uses the same core colors in the original design, and on the back it also has their original jersey’s hockey stick symbol. The president and CEO of the Canucks, Chris Zimmerman, recognizes this saying, “Our goal when we set out was to celebrate our heritage and to design a sweater that reflects our extraordinary city and province. “We wanted to unveil a sweater that reflects our past and our future.” Zimmerman also went on to say the design represents, “who we are and the connection to the community.”

Former NBA ref surrenders to charges he bet on games he officiated

Author: Admin  |  Category: Uncategorized

Wednesday, August 15, 2007

Tim Donaghy, an ex-NBA referee, surrendered today for an appearance in a Brooklyn federal court. Law enforcement officials said that Donaghy allegedly placed his own bets, and also released confidential information to others, including referees’ schedules. Today, Donaghy pleaded guilty to ‘conspiracy to engage in wire fraud’ and ‘transmitting wagering information to other individuals’. These two charges could result in up to 25 years in jail.

Tim Frank, a NBA spokesman, told the Associated Press the league was informed yesterday that Donaghy would plead today but was not given any further information.

Both John Lauro, Donaghy’s attorney, and federal prosecutors did not comment. But, NBA commissioner David Stern said a month ago that the ex-referee’s lawyer told the league Donaghy was contemplating a plea. The plea was made official early today.

Donaghy has been reportedly cooperating with prosecuting attorneys who together are building a case against other people to whom Donaghy may have provided inside information to. It has also been reported that Donaghy had a biased view against the Detroit Pistons, therefore making bets against them, and then calls against them as well

Donaghy today told the court that he had a gambling problem. However, he also said that he was receiving treatment for it.

The Associated Press reports that no other NBA officials or players are suspects in this case.

The FBI contacted the NBA on June 20, 2007 to talk about a referee who was allegedly gambling on games. The FBI and the NBA officially met on June 21. Donaghy resigned from his position July 9, after over ten years as a referee

The Controversial Gas Tax: What Is It And How Does It Work

The Controversial Gas Tax: What Is It and How Does It Work

by

MasterofTrivia2011

The United States is one of the many countries in the world that extracts federal excise tax on gasoline. The decades-long policy was in danger of being placed on the chopping block after some representatives in Congress expressed the desire of letting the gas tax expire on September 30th of this year. According to The New York Times, the Republican right supports ending the gas tax; the organization Americans for Tax Reform was already planning on asking legislators to phase out the gas tax way before its September 30 expiration. The debate about the gas tax also entered the picture during the presidential campaigns of 2008, wherein presidential candidates Hillary Rodham Clinton and John McCain pushed for what they called a gas tax holiday. At that time, Barack Obama dismissed the idea as nothing but a gimmick, citing that any moves to reduce or remove the gas tax will not be beneficial in any way to consumers and to the countrys dependency on foreign oil.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WriQkGQErI[/youtube]

In Defense of the Gas Tax The New York Times shares this stand, as featured in its August 2011 editorial where it cited several reasons why the Gas Tax needs to be extended. The excise tax collected on fuels goes to the Highway Trust Fund, which in turn finances the upkeep and building of bridges, highways, and mass transit systems all over the country. The gas tax is the primary source of the trust fund. It comprises almost nine-tenths of the Highway Trust Fund which, at present, stands at $37 billion. According to the NY Times, this amount can hardly cover the expenses of maintaining the nations roads and railways; as of 2011, $72 billion is still required to meet the demands of bridge repairs alone, and billions of dollars more are needed to ensure road serviceability and enhance traffic safety in both roads and railways. The Treasury Department had to step in to make sure the Highway Trust Fund is able to break evenand yet its obligations continue growing. At present inflation rates, the gas taxs buying power is only 11 cents a massive loss compared to the growing number of motorists and longer driving mileage that contribute greatly to the declining state of the American highway system. The gas tax collects 18.4 cents per gallon exclusive of state taxes; this number remains unchanged since 1993. When state taxes are computed in, American consumers pay an average of 43 cents per gallon of gasoline. This is ten times less than whats being paid by motorists in the United Kingdom, where a gallon of gasoline costs $4 in taxes. Considering the comparative differences in gas taxes and the requirements of the Highway Trust Fund, parties from both sides of the Congress (except some select representatives from the House Republicans who push for the tax to lapse) back an increase in the gas tax in order to support the United States highway transport system. Another reason cited for the extension and possible hike of the gas tax rests on the argument that gas tax receipts, when used in public investment, ultimately put that money back into the American economy. Increasing the gas tax is also seen as a way to create additional jobs (a great balm in the face of this economy) as well as put pressure on motorists to switch to more fuel efficient vehicles. A tax hike may be unwelcome for some, but it clearly is a solution not only to the Highway Trust Fund but also to the economy and the environment. UK announces £200 million polar research ship

Author: Admin  |  Category: Uncategorized

Friday, April 25, 2014

UK Chancellor George Osborne today announced a new £200 million research ship to ply Arctic and Antarctic waters.

The new vessel will make Nerc’s entire fleet, ton for ton, the most advanced scientific fleet in the world

“One of the final frontiers in the world where there is still much discovery to be done are the polar oceans” said Osborne, explaining “our two current polar exploration ships are nearing the end of their life and need replacing. So I am delighted that we are investing in a new polar research ship to carry cutting edge British technology to put British scientists at the forefront of research in both the Antarctic and the Arctic oceans”.

The icebreaking ship is to belong to the British Antarctic Survey and is funded from a £7 billion pot earmarked for science over the next six or seven years. Osborne told those gathered at Cambridge’s Laboratory of Molecular Biology today he had “made it [his] personal priority in government to support [scientific] endeavour.”

Funding body the Natural Environment Research Council (Nerc) says the current ships, RRS James Clark Ross and RRS Ernest Shackleton, are to carry on operating at least until 2020. They were built in 1990 and 1995 respectively; RRS Ernest Shackleton is a leased Norwegian vessel. The new vessel is intended to be able to stay in the field longer and, unlike RRS James Clark Ross, feature a helipad.

Other specifications include the ability to launch unmanned submarines and scientific gliders, devices towed behind ships to gather data, as well as power through 2m (6.6ft) thick ice at three knots.

Osborne also announced the start of consultations on how to spend the rest of the £7 billion. The announcements come shortly after Nerc completed upgrades to ocean-going ‘bluewater’ ships RRS Discovery and RRS James Cook. “The new vessel will make Nerc’s entire fleet, ton for ton, the most advanced scientific fleet in the world” according to Nerc head Professor Duncan Wingham, speaking to the BBC.
