Wikinews interviews Jeremy Hanke, editor of MicroFilmmaker Magazine

Wikinews held an exclusive interview with Jeremy Hanke, editor of MicroFilmmaker Magazine. The magazine, which is free to read online, was started as a resource for the low budget moviemaker and features book, independent film, equipment and software reviews as well as articles on film distribution, special effects and lighting.

He says that one of the goals of the magazine is to “connect low-budget filmmakers via a feeling of community, as many…..often compete so viciously against one another in film festivals for coveted “shots” with Hollywood, that they can quickly forget their similarities.”

When asked if films made on a shoestring budget can really compete with those made for millions of dollars, he replied, “no…yes…and absolutely. Allow me to explain.” And so he does in the interview below.

Tips About Health Care Services

Author: Admin  |  Category: Insurance

With the cost of providing a professional medical service to American families rising, it is not surprising that many people are looking for an affordable health care provider. Increasingly, workers are finding themselves on the receiving end from their employers who are reducing the services provided or passing on the increases. It was not that long ago that I had a fantastic health plan but all that has changed. The first we knew about it was when the company called a meeting informing of some changes including the switch to a cheaper health care provider. The excuse was that they were trying to ensure the new package would help everyone in the company. Many people I have spoken to are happy with the new insurance and that I am just as well provided for. I don not mind other workers benefiting but it costs me more now, almost twice as much more to have my family covered in the plan. OK, so many other people benefit, including my company, but my paycheck is considerably lighter now that the premium has doubled to keep my family on the policy.I liked the previous company and so far I am not as impressed with the new one although the health care plan does not seem that bad. The new affordable health care plan initiated by my company meant that certain workers found themselves a lot worse off financially with additional co-pays and expenses. You see, four years ago, I gave birth to a little girl and of course my old insurance paid for the whole of my hospital stay. Compare this to the new health care plan and I would be out of pocket by over 4,000 dollars. You also have to bear in mind that this additional expense is just the hospital bill and does not include the additional work fees I must now pay. The availability of affordable health care plans is on the increase which should help those less fortunate. Those less fortunate can now get free health care more readily and workers without health care are able to join special schemes. In principle, these plans are a good thing but there are always those that misuse it making the situation difficult for genuine cases. For many people desperately trying to improve their situation these affordable health care plans are a life-line but to others they are just an easy option. I get annoyed because it is the upright taxpayer who has to finance these schemes for the needy and not the state. By switching providers, it was my company that realized the true advantages of this low cost option and a number of employees. Having a reduced income seems to be the result of these work changes with only the company truly benefiting. We have a responsibility here in America to providing some sort of affordable health care for those that need it most.

Interview: Drupal founder Dries Buytaert balances community and company interests

Sunday, February 24, 2008

In the year 2000, Dries Buytaert created Drupal, a freely licensed and open source tool to manage websites, as a bulletin board for his college dorm. Since Dries released the software and a community of thousands of volunteer developers have added and improved modules, Drupal has grown immensely popular. Drupal won the overall Open CMS Award in 2007, and some speakers in Drupal’s spacious developer’s room at FOSDEM 2008 were dreaming aloud of its world domination.

Buytaert (now 29) just finished his doctoral thesis and has founded the start-up Acquia. The new company wants to become Drupal’s best friend, with the help of an all-star team and US$7 million collected from venture capitalists. Wikinews reporter Michaël Laurent sat down with Dries in Brussels to discuss these recent exciting developments.

European Medicines Agency calls AstraZeneca vaccine “safe and effective”

Author: Admin  |  Category: Uncategorized

Sunday, March 21, 2021

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) ruled Thursday, after thirteen European Union (EU) nations suspended rollouts of the Oxford–AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, the jab was “safe and effective” and there was “no indication” of correlation between taking the vaccine and blood clotting.

The review included safety data from over 17 million people vaccinated in the EU and the United Kingdom and focused on cases of uncommon blood disorders.

In a statement on the EMA’s website, the Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee confirmed “the benefits of the vaccine in combating the still widespread threat of COVID-19 (which itself results in clotting problems and may be fatal) continue to outweigh the risk of side effects”, and neither the vaccine, nor “specific batches”, nor “particular manufacturing sites” were associated with an increased risk of blood clots. It also stated there may be a relation between “very rare cases of blood clots associated with thrombocytopenia”.

Over 469 reports, including 191 from the European Economic Area, it was concluded “[o]verall the number of thromboembolic events reported after vaccination […] was lower than that expected in the general population.”

According to multiple sources, many countries in Europe and elsewhere halted inoculations after reports of blood clots and deaths from those who received the jab, while countries including Austria paused rollout of certain batches.

On Thursday, the World Health Organization said in a press briefing countries should still use the AstraZeneca vaccine. Regional director for Europe Hans Kluge said while “we do not know whether some or all of the conditions have been caused by the vaccine or by other coincidental factors […] the benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine far outweigh its risks”. The international body was to release the results of its report on Friday.

While nations can choose whether or not to follow EMA advice, many countries said they would only resume inoculations with its approval. On Tuesday, when the preliminary statement was “encouraging”, France and Italy said they would “promptly restart” if positive results were found.

AstraZeneca said there is no elevated risk of blood clotting as a result of its vaccine, and of the 17 million inoculated in the EU and the UK, only 37 reports of blood clots were received; “much lower than would be expected to occur naturally” and “similar across other licensed COVID-19 vaccines”.

The recent suspensions have only further exacerbated the European Union’s vaccine drive, hindered by serious supply shortages. French immunologist Alain Fischer told France Inter France’s decision to temporarily halt rollout was “not lost time” and the action was justified by “a few very unusual and troubling cases”. Speaking to the BBC, University of Birmingham’s drug safety researcher Dr Anthony Cox called it a “cascade of bad decision-making that’s spread across Europe”.

A Cosmetic Dentist For A Million Dollar Smile

by

ajay shringi

A million dollar smile is an asset. Unfortunately, not all of us are blessed with one. Irregular teeth, brown spots, stains, yellowing teeth, missing tooth etc are some of the factors that drastically reduce the wattage of your smile. The good news is that, unlike in the past where you had to be happy with what Nature gives you, these days, technology can help you alter the aesthetics of your smile – dramatically. Thats what a cosmetic dentist does.

With a range of treatments available, more and more people are turning to cosmetic dentists for a number of reasons. Some people just want the classic Hollywood smile, while others want out from a crooked or gummy smile. Some people go to cosmetic dentists to get whiter teeth or replace fillings. In fact, bleaching or whitening of teeth is one of the most sought after treatments in cosmetic dentistry.

Cosmetic dentists make use of dental implants, veneers and crowns to reconstruct, enhance and repair the existing shape and structure of the mouth. In many cases, people who have knocked off a tooth or sustained injuries from accidents also take the help of a cosmetic dentist to restore their smile.

Some of the most common services of a cosmetic dentist include teeth whitening, veneers, dental implants, dental bonding, fillings, inlays and fixing crowns and bridges. Through these techniques, you can bring about almost any kind of alteration in your oral structure.

Often, patients do not opt for the services of a cosmetic dentist because of their fear of prohibitive costs. However, the cost factor is equivalent to the kind of procedure, the kind of material used, the geographical location of the treatment center and the skill level of the practitioner. The truth of the matter is that for many people, money spent on restoring good looks is money well spent. Patients may also take heart from the fact that there are a number of affordable treatment options. Additionally, a number of dentistry financing plans can help cushion the cost of more expensive and extensive treatments.

Before you invest in your smile, it is important to choose a cosmetic dentist who is highly skilled and has vast experience in the procedure. In this regard, remember that cosmetic dentistry is not the treatment of a disease. Rather, it is highly aesthetic in nature. Your objective is to look as naturally appealing as possible. Therefore, the practitioner needs an artistic touch in addition to technical expertise. That is why it is well worth your while to pay a premium for a cosmetic dentist with artistic vision as well as technical expertise and the latest dentistry know-how.

With a large number of people becoming more and more conscious of their looks, there has been a drastic shift in the thinking processes of people. Today, a striking and presentable exterior is very much a part of the success package. Also, as a sizable section of the population reaches the 50-year mark, there is an increase in demand for cosmetic surgeons and dentists to halt and reverse the ravages of time.

Wikinews interviews specialists on China, Iran, Russia support for al-Assad

Over the past week, diplomatic actions have averted — or, at least delayed — military strikes on Syria by the United States. Wikinews sought input from a range of international experts on the situation; and, the tensions caused by Russia’s support for the al-Assad regime despite its apparent use of chemical weapons.

File:Ghouta chemical attack map.svg

Tensions in the country increased dramatically, late August when it was reported between 100 and 1,300 people were killed in an alleged chemical attack. Many of those killed appeared to be children, with some of the pictures and video coming out of the country showing — according to witnesses — those who died from apparent suffocation; some foaming at the mouth, others having convulsions.

Amongst Syria’s few remaining allies, Iran, China, and Russia continue to oppose calls for military intervention. In an effort to provide a better-understanding of the reasoning behind their ongoing support, the following people were posed a range of questions.

Community members host fundraiser to help family of slain Texas woman

Author: Admin  |  Category: Uncategorized

Monday, March 24, 2014

Community members held a public bake sale fundraiser on Sunday to help the family of a Texas woman slain earlier this month. Alicia Benefield, 19, of DeBerry was killed allegedly by her boyfriend, Rodris Webster. Sharon Jernigan of Panola was the key organizer of the fundraiser.

On Friday, Mrs. Jernigan told Wikinews, “This murder has devastated the entire community.” The fundraiser was held at a small grocery store in the neighboring town of Bethany, which borders the Louisiana–Texas state line. Sunday evening, Jernigan reported, “The bake sale was a big success.”

Webster, 25, was arrested early last week and charged with one count of murder and one count of felon in possession of a firearm. Benefield’s body was found in Marshall, Texas. Upon hearing of the discovery, a family member of the victim posted to his Facebook page, “Struggling to know how someone could do such a horrific thing.” Webster is presently being held on US$1 million bond in the Harrison County jail. Earlier, he was questioned by police on March 16, just two days after Benefield’s car was found at a church near her home, but was released after five hours of questioning.

Dog Health: Puppy Vaccination is Important

by

Riza Humpton

Puppy vaccination is an essential part of maintaining proper health for your dog. Regular immunization will prevent your puppy from getting sick and could avoid diseases. The immune system of a puppy when it\’s born is not yet fully developed and it depens on it\’s mothers milk to get enough antibodies. As a puppy is weaned, these antibodies begin to drop off and it becomes important for a puppy to received the appropriate vaccinations and check-ups to prevent diseases.

What are the Benefits of a Puppy Vaccination?

Diseases that are common in a puppy are Canine Distemper, Parvo Virus, Rabies and Corona virus. To avoid any mishaps and problems in the future, it is recommended that you learn about these diseases. Some of these diseases may affect human through a bite or saliva if not properly taken care of, they may affect the intestinal system as well as cause erratic behavior or they may simply make the puppy very ill and end up with the puppy dying.

Vaccines should be given on a regular basis as they are made to prevent future diseases and infections. Although some puppies may cry when they receive vaccines (even if it affects you badly), you should think of their health. Like humans, once your puppy is vaccinated its immune system will be able to create the required antibodies to fight off infection and disease.

Risks on Puppy Vaccination

Some vaccines can cause unusual behavior, or even introduce illness to the puppy, however the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the risks. It is suggested to take blood samples before vaccination to check how many antibodies the puppy actually has and whether further vaccination is required. Pain and soreness at the place where it was injected might occur after vaccination. Illnesses such as blood disorders, skin issues or neuron problems may also arise.

It is the responsibility of the dog owner to bring their pert to regular check-ups, provide dog\’s exercise routine and maintain dog supplies to keep the puppy\’s health at its best. Owning a pet may need more than cuddling them, it also includes maintenance. Keep your pet healthy, well – groomed and well – trained and try to learn more if you are a first time pet owner. Providing enough dog health and supplies maybe a challenge if you are not much prepared about it. However, if you try to reearch more about taking care of dog and specifically training them you will never be negligent owner.

The

40 alleged drunken Santas accused of running amok

Author: Admin  |  Category: Uncategorized

Monday, December 19, 2005File:Santarchy new zealand.jpg

The conduct by a group of ‘Santas’ making an unclear statement last Saturday is not appreciated in the business district of Auckland, New Zealand. The event, organized in the discussion forum of an online skateboard magazine, caused big media publicity.

Alex Dyer, spokesman for the group, stated that Santarchy in Auckland is part of a worldwide phenomenon. It is disputed if Santarchy is a protest against the commercialization of Christmas or not.

Auckland Central Police spokesperson Noreen Hegarty said to the press that the rampage began in the early part of the afternoon when men wearing ill-fitting Santa costumes threw beer bottles and urinated on cars from an overpass, then rushed through a central city park, overturning garbage bins, throwing bottles at passing cars and spraying graffiti on office buildings.

“They came in, said ‘Merry Christmas’ and then helped themselves,” said a convenience store staff member Changa Manakynda, according to local newspapers.

One writer using the pseudonym ‘Le_SigNagE’ on the Santarchy! (or also known as the Santacon) website commented, “… after all, this is what Christmas is really about… mindless vandalism and petty theft.”

Another writer who posted under the pseudonym Santy Claus said of the media coverage,”There was some major misreporting and Chinese whispers. Breaking bottles and urinating under a bridge, became throwing rocks at buses and urinating on cars from an overpass. The ‘organisers’ as they were, saw little in the way of crime other than one santa attempting to board a foreign vessel by scaling 20 metres along a rope 60 feet in the air. The difficulty and motor skills involved in this task alone should be a defense in itself of being ‘drunk’ and ‘disorderly’.”

Due to Santa’s reputation for integrity and his strict media policy, his sparse communication is mostly one-way: receiving lists from children with wishes for Christmas. It is difficult to get his comment about New Zealands skateboard interested ‘Santas’.

In 1994, the Cacophony Society staged the world’s very first SantaCon in San Francisco. Influenced by the surrealist movement Discordianism, and other subversive art currents.

Thaksin to return to Thai politics

Author: Admin  |  Category: Uncategorized

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Several reports indicate that the ousted fugitive ex-Prime Minister of Thailand, Thaksin Shinawatra, is to again become involved in the country’s politics. He is scheduled to give another phone-in address from abroad on December 14 to supporters at the national Suphachalasai Stadium.

People’s Power Party (PPP) MP, and spokesman for the pro-government “Truth Today” roadshow Jatuporn Promphan said, “Thaksin will no longer wait to be attacked, he will fight back by all means, particularly with an eye-for-an-eye strategy, from now on. Thaksin now believes that the only way for him to survive and to live is to fight for his name”.

Currently in exile and facing a two year jail term should he return to Thailand, Thaksin informed lawyers from his current residence in Dubai that he would not appeal the conviction for corruption in the Ratchadapisek land deal. While lawyers claim to have prepared the needed paperwork to challenge the conviction, the deadline to do so is today.

Thaksin will no longer wait to be attacked, he will fight back by all means, particularly with an eye-for-an-eye strategy

According to the Bangkok Post, a return to politics by the ex-PM has caused some concern among PPP government members over the divisions this could cause within the country. Thaksin still enjoys a great deal of support from the rural poor in the country’s North-East where the populist policies of his now-outlawed Thai Rak Thai (TRT) party helped win a majority. His most vocal critics, the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) have now occupied Government House in Bangkok for over three months.

The close association of the ruling PPP with the former premier has given them their own set of problems. The party is actively contesting a case in the country’s supreme court that could see it dissolved. The case centres around allegations of vote buying and the party’s former deputy leader, Yongyuth Tiyapairat, stands accused of paying village heads for votes. The PPP disputes that this was a party action as opposed to the independent actions of Yongyuth and the other accused. A ruling on the fraud from last December’s election is expected soon.

Critics of the government claim that it is simply a front for the ex-PM and his dissolved party. The yellow-shirted PAD protesters at Government House assert that current Prime Minister, Somchai Wongsawat, Thaksin’s brother-in-law, is merely a proxy for the controversial ex-leader.

Prosecution of Thaksin on other charges, which he maintains are politically motivated, continues; the supreme court is expected to hold a hearing next month on accusations that he is ‘unusually rich’. This relates to the sale of the family’s stake in Shin Corporation to Temasek Holdings, the investment arm of the Singapore government. Assets worth 76 billion baht (US$ 2.2 billion) are currently frozen over this issue. The ex-PM escaped impeachment over the tax-free sale of Shin in February 2006. Thai media reports that an amicable divorce of Thaksin and his wife Pojaman in Hong Kong will have no bearing on the case or asset seizure. Despite the split last week neither can return to Thailand without facing imprisonment; Potjam was earlier successfully prosecuted and given a three year sentence.
