Broken pipes cause flood in Darwin D. Martin House in Buffalo, New York

Author: Admin  |  Category: Uncategorized
Correction — February 13, 2008 The break was a broken sprinkler head in a crawl space above the shop, according to Jeffrey A. Salmon Facilities Manager of the Martin House Restoration Corporation. Not a pipe.

Tuesday, February 12, 2008

Buffalo, New York —According to radio communications by the Buffalo, New York Fire Department, at approximately 10:15 p.m. EST two water pipes inside the Darwin D. Martin House, a National Historical Landmark, broke causing several rooms to flood.

The breaks were discovered in the gift shop area of the house but quickly began to flood other areas near the shop as firefighters had a difficult time locating the main shut off valves.

At 10:50 p.m., firefighters reported to have shut off “several main valves” stopping the flow of water. The cost of the water damage is not known, but covered several rooms. Recent sub-zero temperatures in the city is said to be the cause of the break. At the time of the call, the temperature was only 10°F with a wind chill of 4°F above zero. On Sunday the temperature was only 3°F with a wind chill of -23°F.

The house, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, has seen rough times over the years, experiencing problems such as vandalism. The first half of the complex was built in 1903 and finished in 1905. After the pergola, conservatory, and carriage were demolished, restoration and rebuild began in 1992 and is scheduled for completion in 2008 or 2009.

Juicing For Your Blood Type

by

Jan Gilbert

Ever wonder why a particular diet works great for some people but not others? Well now we know! Finnish scientists recently discovered that molecules which cover the surface of blood cells and determine each persons blood type are energized by different nutrients. In other words, certain foods are better suited to certain blood types. Thus, eating and juicing – according to your blood type can be effective in lowering weight, boosting energy, and relieving GI problems.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOecLVgUTZ8[/youtube]

Eating according to your blood type has been an intriguing theory for decades as presented in the book, Eat Right 4 Your Blood Type by Peter DAdamo, N.D. This article briefly reviews the foods that are best for each blood type, with a particular emphasis on fruits and vegetables and juicing recipes. There are 4 blood types: O, A, B, and AB. Type O is the oldest blood type according to DAdamos theory, set in our genes when we first emerged as hunter-gatherers. Type Os have the hardiest digestive systems which consume mostly meat. Type A people come from the later development of agrarian society which adapted for the optimum digestion of all kinds of plant food. Type B folks are descended from nomadic people who raised herds and adapted to eating both plants and meat. Type AB arose most recently in our evolutionary history with digestive systems with both A and B blood type characteristics. Type Os do best with a high protein and low carb diet. Their digestive systems need lean animal protein for optimal health along with certain fruits and vegetables, but only a minimum of carbohydrates. Since their digestive systems are high in acid, coffee and processed sugar is to be avoided. Rigorous exercise makes Os feel at their best. Foods that dont do well with Os are: wheat, corn, beans, cabbage, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, avocado, eggplant, mushrooms, olives, potatoes, mustard greens, sugar, bacon, ham, and pork, caviar, lox, herring, and octopus, cashews, peanuts, pistachios, dairy, cereals, pasta, oranges, melon, strawberries, apples, cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper, vanilla, vinegar, ketchup, mayonnaise, pickles, coffee, distilled liquor, all soda, and black tea. The best ingredients for Type O juices are cherries, leafy greens (particularly kale, spinach, and broccoli), bananas, blueberries, figs, mangos, and plums. The sugars naturally found in these fruits and vegetables combined with their alkalinity will not increase the acidity in the type O constitution. Here are some great juice recipes for Os: 20 cherries, pitted 1 stalk celery 1 leaf kale 2 mangos, with skins, without seed 1 banana, remember not to juice bananas as they will clog your juicer blend them 1 spear broccoli People with type A blood have a less hardy digestive system, and dont process meat well. They do best with vegetables and fruits as well as whole grains, tofu, and legumes. Animal protein and dairy products tend to rot and ferment in their digestive tracts, and the toxic bacteria backs up into their tissues and muscles, causing digestive distress. Type As have less hydrochloric acid in their stomachs which is why they do not properly absorb Vitamin B12 which is found in red meat, although B12 is also found in vegetable protein foods such as Spirulina, soy, and seaweed. The best exercise is not a vigorous workout, but rather calming, centering exercises like Tai Chi, Hatha Yoga and golfing. Type As should avoid meat, dairy, sugar, white and whole wheat flour, corn oil, cottonseed oil, peanut, safflower and sesame oil, brazil nuts, cashews, pistachios, garbanzo, kidney, lima, navy, red beans, tamarind beans, cereals, pasta, cabbage, eggplant, lima beans, mushroom, olives, peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, yams, bananas, coconuts, mangoes, melon, oranges, papayas, plantains, rhubarb, tangerines, gelatin, pepper, vinegar, wintergreen, ketchup, mayonnaise, pickles, pickle relish, Worcestershire sauce, beer, distilled liquor, seltzer water, all sodas, and black tea. The best Type A foods are berries, figs, plums, avocado, pears, peaches, broccoli, carrots, collard greens, kale, spinach, garlic, soy products, pineapple, and only moderate amounts of fish and poultry. Type A folks do really well digesting grains and beans such as green beans, black beans, black-eyed peas, lentils, and soy. Snack on nuts and seeds. 3 cups pineapple 1 pear 2 leaves kale 5 carrots 2 spear broccoli 1 thumb ginger People with blood type B have very tolerant digestive systems. They do well with meat, plant, and dairy foods with only a few exceptions. DAdamo highly suggests that type Bs eat turkey rather than chicken because the later has a protein that directly interferes with type B metabolism. They should avoid corn, buckwheat, lentils, peanuts, and sesame seeds, as these foods will tend to make them gain weight. Just like the Type O’s, Type B’s tend to have a problem with wheat products and nuts. Foods that are particularly good for Bs besides red meat and turkey are liver, eggs, seafood, especially deep ocean fish such as cod and salmon, flounder, halibut, sole, licorice tea, soy products, olive and flaxseed oil, oatmeal and puffed rice. Foods to avoid are corn, lentils, black-eyed peas, garbanzo beans, peanuts, sesame seeds, buckwheat, wheat, shellfish, tomatoes, tofu, artichokes, avocados, olives, pumpkin, radishes, tempeh, oil of canola, corn, cottonseed, peanut, safflower, sesame and sunflower, coconuts, persimmons, pomegranates, prickly pears, rhubarb, starfruit, allspice, almond extract, barley malt, cinnamon, cornstarch, corn syrup, plain gelatin, black and white pepper, tapioca, ketchup, hard distilled liquor, seltzer water, all sodas, amaranth, barley, cornflakes, cornmeal, cream of wheat, kamut, kasha, rye, seven-grain, shredded wheat, wheat bran, and wheat germ. Great type B juices include leafy greens, beets, carrots, sweet potatoes, peppers, eggplant, bananas, cranberries, grapes, plums, watermelon, papaya, and pineapple. watermelon, without rind 10 grapes, seeds and all 4 leaves mint 5 carrots red pepper 1 spear broccoli 1 thumb ginger And finally the rarest blood type is AB which has only been around for the relatively short period of 1000 years. AB blood is a result of the intermingling of disparate groups. ABs combine the best and the worst of As and Bs – most foods that are bad for As and Bs, are also bad for ABs, with the exception of tomatoes. Like Type A, ABs produce less hydrochloric stomach acid and thus do not do well with a lot of animal protein, yet some is essential. Therefore, portion size is important, and with less frequency. Be sure to take bromelain, a digestive enzyme derived from pineapple, to assist with the digestion of your animal protein meals. The best meats for you are lamb, mutton, rabbit and turkey. Also, avoid smoked and cured meats. Foods to avoid are red meat, kidney and lima beans, seeds, corn, buckwheat, wheat, chicken, cornish hen, duck, goose, ham, heart, partridge, pork, veal, venison, quail, anchovies, barracuda, beluga, bluegill bass, clams, conch, crab, crayfish, eel, flounder, frog, haddock, halibut, herring (pickled), lobster, lox (smoked salmon), octopus, oysters, sea bass, shrimp, sole, striped bass, turtle, yellowtail, cheese, ice cream, sherbet, whole milk, corn oil, cottonseed oil, safflower, sesame, and sunflower oil, filberts, poppy seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame butter (tahini), sesame seeds, sunflower butter, sunflower seeds, adzuke, black beans, fava beans, garbanzo, kidney, and lima beans, black-eyed peas, cornflakes, cornmeal, kamut, kasha, corn muffins, buckwheat kasha, barley flour; artichoke pasta, soba (buckwheat) noodles, artichoke (domestic & Jerusalem), avocado, white & yellow corn, black olives, peppers, radishes, mung bean & radish sprouts, bananas, coconuts, guava, mangoes, oranges, persimmons, pomegranates, prickly pears, rhubarb, and starfruit. The best AB foods are tofu, seafood, dairy, green vegetables, spirulina, sea kelp, and pineapple. Great AB juice recipes are: 4 cups pineapple teaspoon spirulina 1 thumb mint 5 carrots 1 beet 1 wheatgrass 4 leaves mint

Former Timberwolf Eddie Griffin dies at 25

Author: Admin  |  Category: Uncategorized

Friday, August 24, 2007

Former National Basketball Association (NBA) player Eddie Griffin died on August 17, 2007, at age 25 due to injuries sustained in a car crash, the Harris County medical examiner’s office confirmed on Tuesday.

The former Minnesota Timberwolves forward, who was waived in March for violating the League’s substance abuse program, ignored a railroad warning, drove his SUV through a barrier, and collided with a moving train at about 1:30 a.m., according to Houston Police. His vehicle caught fire and was soon engulfed in flames.

No identification was found and the body was badly burned. For that reason, dental records were used to identify him. Griffin, who played college Basketball at Seton Hall University, played for the Houston Rockets from 2001–2003, and the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2004–2007. The five-year veteran had been battling alcoholism since leaving Seton Hall. He is survived by his three-year-old daughter Amaree.

Using The Neck Massage Options Of The Inada Sogno Massage Chair

Using the Neck Massage Options of the Inada Sogno Massage Chair

by

Dr. Alan Weidner

Roller or Airbag Massage of the Inada Sogno The Inada Sogno Dreamwave massage chair never ceases to amaze with its versatility. One feature it has that you may not realize is the ability to change up the intensity of the massage simply by changing the position of the headrest (or cervical traction device, as it is called by Inada) with it’s attached back pad below it!

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6xaYLBcUYo[/youtube]

The head and neck traction unit that rests at the top of the chair is fabulous when you want the neck traction feature and the kneading airbag massage around the neck. You know how it feels to have someone grab your neck with one hand and massage the muscles with their thumb on one side and their other fingers on the other side of your neck? Well, that is what the airbag massage of the cervical traction device feels on your neck when you are in the Inada Sogno. “A More Vigorous Neck Massage, Please, From The Inada Sogno” The airbag massage is fantastic, but some folks want a more vigorous neck massage…something a little bit deeper on the upper back and neck than the airbags. In other words, some people want to feel the good old roller massage on the neck muscles. You can make that happen on the Inada Sogno simply by lifting the cervical traction device (aka head rest) up and out of the way and then fastening the head piece onto the top of the chair with snaps on either side of the top of the chair back. When you lift that head piece and attached padding out of the way, there is only a single layer of faux leather uphostery between yourself and the chairs rollers. As a matter of fact, as you move up the back, the only material between your neck/upper back and the rollers is a thin piece of linen. So, what I am saying is that, if you would like to take it one step further and go even deeper with your neck and upper back massage you can just flip the whole head unit and attached pad over the back of the chair. Now you have just a thin linen fabric layer between the chair’s rollers and your sore upper back and neck muscles! This is a great way, that most folks aren’t aware of, to use the chair. It allows for a much more aggressive roller massage in this area. We have heard a few shoppers tell us that that chair massage felt a little too gentle for their liking. If you are one of those who want a more vigorous massage from the Inada Sogno, you can truly get it to be as intense or gentle as you like. The Stretch Program of the Inada Sogno One automatic program that feels particularly amazing with the head unit positioned over the back is the “Stretch”. I love it because during the program the rollers will roll from the tip of your sacrum (that’s the lowest part of your low back near the top of the buttocks) all the way up your spine to the base of your head and then hold that position allowing the muscles some moments to relax! When your muscles are relaxed, the effect of the stretch is greater and the results will be longer lasting. One important point to remember when you lift the cervical traction device (head piece) up and out of the way, is that you will need more clearance between the chair and wall if you fully recline. The last thing you want is your Inada Sogno massage chair rubbing and pushing against your nicely painted wall!

‘Fascinating’ and ‘provocative’ research examines genetic elements of bipolar, schizophrenia

Author: Admin  |  Category: Uncategorized

Saturday, October 1, 2011

Last week, Nature Genetics carried twin studies into the genetics of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. This special report examines the month’s research into the illnesses in detail, with Wikinews obtaining comment from experts based in Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom ahead of the U.S. Mental Illness Awareness Week, which starts tomorrow.

Eleven genetic regions were identified; seven of these were for schizophrenia and five of those were hitherto undiscovered. The parallel studies, conducted separately, examined more than 50,000 people worldwide and identified two genetic loci associated with both diseases.

Little is known about the two illnesses, each of which affects around 1% of people and is treated with strong medication. Bipolar sufferers experience extremes of mood – depression and mania, hence the previous name “manic depression” for the illness. Schizophrenia is associated with hearing voices, chaotic thoughts, and paranoia. There is no known cure.

The latest research examined both the healthy and the afflicted, using computers to scan genomes. Inheritance was thought to be a factor from prior knowledge of the diseases as a familial trait, but the original desire had been to isolate a single faulty gene. Instead it has become apparent that the genetic factors are many; in the case of schizophrenia, at most around 30% of the genetic components are thought to have been identified.

If any single centre tried to undertake such a study, it would require millions of pounds.

The University of Chicago’s Pablo Gejman, a lead researcher on the schizophrenia study, explained to Wikinews in a telephone interview from Buenos Aires, Argentina that “One of the goals of genetic research is to find druggable targets” – to “find treatments at the root of the problem”.

Whilst noting that there is no guarantee the genetic code identified is druggable, Gejman named calcium-activated neurochemical channels in the brain as candidates for new drugs. The channels were linked to schizophrenia in the study.

Gejman explained that a genetic locus called mir137 “suggests an abnormality of gene regulation.” The diseases are so poorly understood that it is uncertain if they are in fact two components of a single spectrum, or even each comprised of multiple illnesses.

The new and “provocative data” gathered showed the significant loci identified were “not part of the pre-existent hypothesis.” Calling this “interesting”, Gejman added that the team found no evidence that dopamine receptors are involved; current drug treatments target dopamine receptors. The findings are “not related to anything we thought we knew [about schizophrenia],” he told our correspondent.

Quizzed about the possibility variations in the genetic factors involved in expressing the diseases explained the variation seen in symptoms, Gejman was uncertain. “We will have the answer, probably, only when we sequence the whole [human] genome.” He notes that the relationship between genotype and phenotype is unclear, and that “We know very little of the genetic architecture of schizophrenia and” other disorders. At the time the results were published, participating scientist Professor Rodney Scott from the University of Newcastle in Australia said “The strength of this research is in the numbers. The findings are robust and give us a lot of statistical power to identify the genetic determinants of schizophrenia.” Scott told Wikinews that “If any single centre tried to undertake such a study, it would require millions of pounds. Since it was a collection of data from across the world the costs were spread. In this era of financial difficulty it will become increasingly difficult to secure funding for this type of project even though the pay-offs will be significant.”

Gejman expressed similar sentiment. “The research budget is not growing, which makes [funding] difficult,” he said, though he felt the cost “is not prohibitive because of the benefits.” “I think that it was money well invested” and “very well spent for the future,” he said, adding that organisations in Europe and the US were aware of the importance of such research.

Gejman also agreed on reliability – the study is “Very reliable because of the sample size; that should provide robust results… [we] have worked with a much larger sample than before.” Scott told us it was “a highly reliable study” that has the potential to lead to new treatments “in the long run”.

Another point was the two genetic loci identified as common to both – how much support do they lend to the notion the diseases are linked? “Until more information is available it is really only suggestive,” says Scott. “Strong enough to say there may be potentially a common pathway that bifurcates to give rise to two diseases.”

The provision of specialist services for bipolar is very limited in the UK and the demand for our services is unprecedented.

“It is an excellent demonstration,” said Gejman “because you have the same chains that are common to both disorders, in fact not just the same chains but also the same alleles.” He stressed uncertainty in how strong the relationship was, however.

Scott said examining how the variation of genetic factors may translate into varied symptoms being expressed “certainly is a good target for future research”; “It is not known how many genetic factors contribute to either of these diseases but it is likely that not all are necessary to trigger disease.” “New questions will always arise from any major study,” he told our reporter. “Certainly, new questions about bipolar and schizophrenia are now able to be formulated on the basis of the results presented in the two reports.”

These weren’t the only studies to look at the two diseases together in September. The British Medical Journal carried research by a team from the University of Oxford and King’s College London that examined mortality rates in England for schizophrenia and bipolar sufferers. They found both groups continued to suffer higher mortality rates than the general population – whilst these included suicides, three quarters of deaths were down to ailments such a s heart conditions. General death rates dropped from 1999 to 2006, but sufferers below 65 saw their death rate remain stable – and the over-65 saw theirs increase.

“By 2006, the excess risk in these groups had risk to twice the rate of the general population, whereas prior to that it had only been 1.6 times the risk, so it increased by almost 40%,” said Dr Uy Hoang of Oxford. The study looked at every discharged inpatient with a diagnosis of either condition in England in the relevant time.

Hoang said at the time of the research’s release that doctors should devote attention to predicting and preventing physical illness associated with mental disorders. His study comes at a time when the UK has launched a “no health without mental health” strategy which does attempt to screen for physical illnesses coinciding with mental illnesses. The government aims to reduce the death rate of those with mental disorders.

Rodney Scott described this research result to Wikinews as “Possibly” connected to genetic association with other hereditary ailments, such as cardiovascular disease; he told us another possibility is that “The continued raised mortality rates may be associated with the diseases themselves.”

“We believe the NHS [National Health Service] and Department of Health need to do more to support research and service development for people with bipolar disorder,” Wikinews was told by Suzanne Hudson, Chief Executive of London-based British charity MDF The Bipolar Organisation. “The provision of specialist services for bipolar is very limited in the UK and the demand for our services is unprecedented.”

“A genetic test for bipolar would be a useful tool but the science and ethics are very complex,” Hudson told us, referring to the Nature Genetics genetic study. “Just because someone has ‘bipolar genes’ does not mean they might go on to develop it. Family studies of bipolar show that this is a likely outcome of genetics research in this area. Even if it were possible to accurately predict bipolar in this way, questions about how you treat that person are difficult. For example do you start medication that is not necessary at that point in time?”

“Current treatment is not satisfactory” because it does not always work and has “side effects,” Gejman told us. Robert Whitaker, a US medical journalist and book author, told an audience in New Zealand at the end of August that evidence suggests antidepressant drugs may make children and teenagers worse – “You see many become worse and end up with a more severe diagnosis, like bipolar illness,” and the suicide risk may increase.

Whitaker blames commercial interests. “The adult market appeared saturated, and so they began eying children and teenagers. Prior to this, few children and youth were seen as suffering from major depression, and so few were prescribed anti-depressants.”

One possible alternative, raised by a connection between depressive illness and inflammation, is aspirin and similar compounds. “The link between inflammation and mood disorders has been known for sometime and the use of aspirin and other drugs in depression is now becoming more common in the literature,” Hudson says. “Any new treatments for bipolar, which is a very complex and co-morbid illness, has to be a good thing.”

Professor Dr. Michael Berk, chairman of psychiatry at Australia’s Deakin University, recently gave a talk to just this effect. Speaking at this year’s Congress of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology, held this past month, he also highlighted statins as a treatment. Recognising the link to physical ailments, he told an interviewer “The brain does not exist in isolation, and we need to understand that pathways similar to those that underpin risks for cardiovascular disorders, stroke, and osteoporosis might also underpin the risk for psychiatric disorders, and that other treatments might be helpful.”

Berk also touched upon speed of diagnosis and treatment; “Early interventions can potentially improve the outcome” of bipolar sufferers, he told his audience. MDF The Bipolar Organisation claim an average of ten years is possible before a person is diagnosed. “This clearly is an issue, if we believe that earlier diagnosis and treatment facilitate better outcomes,” Berk told Wikinews. Though he questions the effectiveness of currently-used drugs on advanced bipolar cases, he does not go so far as to say drugs are actively harmful. He told us “it appears that our best treatments work best earlier in the illness course; and that seems to apply to psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy.”

Berk has already performed research using statins which suggests they can form a treatment. He now seeks funding for research involving aspirin. On funding, he tells Wikinews “psychiatric disorders comprise between 16% and 22% of the burden of disability (depending on who measures it), attracts[sic] just over 6% of the clinical budget at least in Australia and 3% of the research budget. Research as a discretionary spending item is at great risk.”

Berk’s research, in the past, has been funded by companies including GlaxoSmithKline. Hudson told Wikinews this did not concern her charity; in fact, they welcomed it. “We believe it is important pharmaceutical companies continue to invest in the development of new medications for bipolar. This is how it works in all other health specialities and mental health should be no different.”

“There is a need for greater education for mental health professionals and GPs [general practitioners] about bipolar [in the UK],” she told us. “As the national bipolar charity we receive many, many calls and requests from GPs and other health professionals for our leaflets and information sheets which is fantastic. We very much welcome opportunities to work together for the benefit of individuals affected by bipolar.”

Wikinews contacted the UK’s National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) to discuss issues raised in this article, including future treatments, genetic screening, and mortality rates. NICE did not respond.

Might statins and/or aspirin improve treatment – might they be cheaper, perhaps, or safer? “This is an area of research promise,” says Berk, “however it is too early to make any clinical treatment claims; [all] we can say is that this needs to be studied in properly designed trials capable of giving a more definitive answer.” And what of possible explanations for the increased mortality rate observed in England? Should researchers look at whether bipolar influences more than just the brain, or if it is linked to other genetic conditions?

“For sure,” he told us. “There is new evidence that similar pathways contribute to the risk for both medical and psychiatric illness, both in terms of lifestyle factors, and biomarkers of risk.”

Six killed in UK car crash

Author: Admin  |  Category: Uncategorized

Saturday, February 14, 2009

A car crash on the A614 road, in Nottinghamshire, England has killed six people, all of whom are believed to have lived near the scene of the crash.

All six victims died at the scene of the crash, which involved four young adults in a Peugeot 206 and two elderly people, possibly a male and female, who police believe to be in their 60s, in the other car said to be a Ford Fiesta. Rescue workers fought to save the one of the elderly individuals, but were unsuccessful. Both vehicles collided head-on and exploded upon colliding.

Two police officers on traffic patrol discovered the crash, which took place at 23:00 local time (UTC) yesterday. The officers involved were praised by Bruce Cameron, a superintendent for Nottinghamshire Police. “The bodies are very badly burnt and they will have to be identified using dental records. We want to make sure we are absolutely certain as to who was in both cars when the accident happened,” he said.

Local residents say that the A614 has been the scene of a large number of accidents. One resident, Stuart Stonebridge, told The Daily Telegraph that “we only moved here three years ago and there have been a lot of accidents and some fatalities in that time,” while another resident, Janice Gilbody said that “the people of Bilsthorpe will be in shock, horror and disbelief at the young lives lost.”

Gilbody also said that this accident is “yet again another accident on this road.” She then added that the road was dangerous, saying that “it’s a wonder it doesn’t happen more often.”

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but police say weather was not a contributing factor.

Ukrainian manufacturer preparing to sell Adolf Hitler dolls

Author: Admin  |  Category: Uncategorized

Thursday, April 24, 2008

Correction — May 3, 2008 This article has been retracted. This article has been deemed a hoax. Please see the follow up article, Hitler doll story found to be hoaxed, for more information.

News reports are claiming that dolls depicting former Nazi leader Adolf Hitler will go on sale in Ukraine. These reports cite Ukraine’s Zerkalo Nedeli newspaper which reported that a toy manufacturer would release the line of Hitler dolls in the summer.

The 40cm doll will reportedly first be available in Kiev with a £100 (GBP) price tag and comes with a large range of accessories in a presentation box with the dates of Hitler’s birth and death.

Nazis images are illegal in Ukraine, with positive portrayal specifically banned. However, there are allegations that right-wing nationalist politics are gaining strength in the country and that xenophobia and racism are on the rise, including some said to be comparable to that present in Germany under Nazi rule. Fascism and propaganda are also banned.

When the former Soviet Union, including Ukraine, was invaded by Germany under Hitler’s rule 2–3 million Ukrainians were among the casualties, of which 1.5 million were Jews.

Adolf can be dressed in various guises, including “early days Adolf”, which consists of a brown shirt and jodhpurs, and “Wartime Adolf”, which features a grey tunic, black trousers and the Iron Cross medal. The doll also comes with boots and shoes, caps, gloves, full uniforms, cane and belt which can be placed on Hitler, whose arms move, allowing the doll to replicate the famed salute of its real life counterpart.

Kids can undress fuhrer, pin on medals and there’s a spare head in the kit to give him a kinder expression on his face

Also included is a model of Blondi, Hitler’s female German Shepherd, who was exceedingly loyal to Hitler. Hitler poisoned Blondi with cyanide in 1945 at the same time as taking his own life in his bunker at Berlin.

“It is like Barbie. Kids can undress fuhrer, pin on medals and there’s a spare head in the kit to give him a kinder expression on his face. He has glasses that are round, in the manner of pacifist John Lennon,” said one saleswoman. The company, which will release the dolls in Summer, says that if demand is high a range of toys themed on the Third Reich may be released, to include barracks, working models of crematoriums and gas chambers, concentration camps and interior models of the chancellery.

The doll is not set to be released until the summer, but BBC News Online has footage suggesting that some stores are selling the doll already.

How to Have the Best Camping Trip with Friends

by

William F Gabriel

Are you planning to go on a camping trip with your friends anytime soon? You are sure in for a lot of treats. For one, camping will give you a chance to bond and have fun. You can do various exciting outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, trekking, mountain climbing, swimming, boating, bird watching, and wildlife viewing. All of these activities are meant to bring you all closer to nature. However, while camping seems to automatically sound like a lot of fun, you should remember that there are many things you should do to ensure that the trip would be successful. To help you have a blast, here are some important reminders to keep in mind.

Gather Everyone for Planning

Planning plays an important role in the success of the trip. When planning the camping vacation, it is best to have everyone join in so you can hear the ideas of others. You can plan for the destination, activities, and food to bring, that everyone will like and enjoy. This will ensure that everyone will have a grand time during the trip. For example, if you are going to plan for the camping destination, choosing a destination that everyone approves of will ensure that nobody will complain during the trip. Involving everyone in the menu planning will also see to it that nobody is allergic to the dish you intend to cook.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETvn8-cGahc[/youtube]

Invest in Quality Camping Gear

Another thing you should do is to invest in excellent quality camping gear. This is very important because camping gear also contributes not only to the fun factor of the trip, but more essentially to the safety of everyone. You should save enough money for you to be able to buy Wenzel, Wenger, or Coleman camping gear.

Bring Sufficient Food and Water

Food and water are human s basic needs. In a campground, where there are no available food stands, restaurants, or convenience stores, it pays to bring sufficient food and water good enough for everyone. A wildfire affected eighteen hectares of scrubland, grassland and eucalyptus in the Ranguilí area of Lolol, Chile.

Due to strong winds and climatic conditions in the area, as well as the imminent risk of it spreading to homes, the National Emergencies Office of the Ministry of the Interior (ONEMI) declared a red alert for the commune on Sunday. It was then decreased to yellow alert, until it was finally lifted on Tuesday, after the wildfire was extinguished.

Both Chile’s National Early Warning Centre, and the O’Higgins Region ONEMI monitored the wildfire.

Lolol is a town located in the Colchagua Province of O’Higgins Region, in Chile. It is home to about 6,200 residents, and part of its urban center is considered a “Typical Zone” by the National Monuments Council.

New UN Secretary General assumes post

Monday, January 1, 2007

Ban Ki-moon, South Korean foreign minister, officially assumed his post as United Nations Secretary-General today.

Ban, the eighth UN Secretary-General, is also the first Asian to serve in this office in 35 years.

Ban, 62, grew up on the Korean peninsula in the midst of the Korean War that divided the region. He promises to bring peace to the North Korean nuclear conflict.

Along with North Korea, Ban faces a litany of difficult issues including the genocide in Darfur, tensions in the Middle East, an international campaign against AIDS and poverty in line with his predecessor Kofi Annan’s Millennium Goals, a push to increase the size of the Security Council, and calls for ethics reform within the United Nations.

In his inaugural address, Ban said, “My first priority will be to restore trust.”

“The United States will rely on his leadership to help steer the UN organization through the reforms already underway,” said White House spokesman Scott Stanzel on Sunday, “and to propel it even further on the path of reform.”

Ban will temporarily reside in a hotel in New York City until renovations on his official residence are completed as part of a modernization plan approved by the UN General Assembly.
