The Importance Of Human Resource Management A Study By Artur Victoria

Author:  |  Category: Retail

By Artur Victoria

Human resource management involves a good leader, a healthy work environment, and a good job to produce a motivated employee. A results-oriented approach to employee relations requires management skills in identifying problems, setting priorities, and developing and evaluating alternatives as well as the ability to communicate, initiate action, implement it, measure it, control it, and change its course as necessary.

The roots of most management problems lie in the organization’s misuse of its human resources. In most cases this is not deliberate, but is a problem of inattention resulting from a lack of knowledge of how to identify the real causes of those problems.

The human resources executive is well aware that the real causes are poor human relations practices at all levels of management. Any of the problem areas may be a result or manifestation of anyone or several of the listed causes. Good managers do not treat the symptoms; they root out the underlying causes. The human resources executive assists in the process and, in large measure, provides the solutions. The end result is a permanent and lasting cure and hence reduced costs and increased productivity.

Effective human relations do not happen by chance; it is the result of careful management planning, implementation, and follow-up. Professional training is a prerequisite. Therefore, a number of professional disciplines are stressed in the following specification for the human resources executive.

Slippery business: Materials scientists invent new coating for self-cleaning, water-efficient toilets

Author:  |  Category: Uncategorized

Thursday, November 21, 2019

In findings published on Monday in Nature Sustainability, researchers mostly from Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) in the U.S. reported the invention of a new coating that could reduce bacterial growth, water waste, and odor when sprayed onto an ordinary house toilet by rendering its surface too slippery for anything to remain attached for long.

According to the research team, half of all people worldwide are affected by limits on their water supply, while daily fresh water usage to flush the planet’s roughly 1 billion toilets and flush urinals is upwards of 141 billion liters (about 37 billion U.S. gallons, 31 billion imperial gallons); which they note is several times larger than the total rate of water consumption for the continent of Africa. Inventions that render the facilities more water-efficient, they reason, could have a profound impact on wastewater management, sustainable water use, and sanitation, possibly cutting the amount of water used to flush waste by, reportedly, a factor of two.

“Our team” study co-author Tak-Sing Wong said in a press release “has developed a robust bio-inspired, liquid, sludge-, and bacteria-repellent coating that can essentially make a toilet self-cleaning[.]” Wong is Penn State’s Wormley Early Career Professor of Engineering and an associate professor of mechanical engineering and biomedical engineering.

Co-developer Jing Wang recounted, “When we put that coating on a toilet in the lab and dump synthetic fecal matter on it, [the synthetic fecal matter] just completely slides down and nothing sticks to [the coated surface.]”

The more something sticks to a surface, the more water it takes to rinse it off. The researchers reported inventing a coating good at resisting substances that are sticky and vary profoundly in viscosity across their mass—like human fecal matter. They also reported the coating repels bacteria, which has implications for preventing the spread of disease and certainly reduces smells.

The invention, called a liquid-entrenched smooth surface (LESS) coating, involves two separate treatments, both presented as suitable for spraying onto ceramics amongst other materials. The first spray is made of molecularly grafted polymers, specifically polydimethylsiloxane silicone, that Wang described as resembling human hairs — though vastly thinner — once it has dried on the target surface, which makes the surface very smooth. The second spray covers the target surface in silicone lubricant. According to the report, the two-spray process is complete in under five minutes and lasts for roughly 500 flushes before requiring reapplication. Existing treatments have tended to take hours to set.

Carl Hensman of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which offered a contest for redesigning the toilet some years ago, noted the ingredients in the sprays are also found in commonly used products like — in the case of the first spray — toothpaste, and are unlikely to pollute nearby water supplies; though he also remarked that, because the spray wears off, it was unlikely to be used widely in developing countries as the researchers claim to hope.

Wong and three of his co-authors have started a company, spotLESS Materials, to transform their invention into a product. He remarked, “As a researcher in an academic setting, my goal is to invent things that everyone can benefit from […] As a Penn Stater, I see this culture being amplified through entrepreneurship, and I’m excited to contribute.” They have received support from the Rice Business Plan Competition, Ben Franklin Technology Partners’ TechCelerator, Y-Combinator, and the United States’ National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, and Office of Naval Research.

Housebreaking Your Puppy With Wire Dog Crates

Author:  |  Category: Puppies For Sale

Submitted by: Ryan Pauline

One of the primary uses of a dog crate is as an aid in housebreaking. Wire crates are popular because of their versatility. They can be folded for storage or easy transport, and they’re less obtrusive in the home than plastic dog crates.

Both puppies and adult dogs can be housebroken with the help of pet crate training. This is because dogs instinctively don’t eliminate where they sleep. Puppies can’t hold their bladders and bowels for more than three or four hours, so they shouldn’t be expected to spend longer than this in a crate.

Housebroken adults can spend six hours or so in a dog crate comfortably, but should never be crated for eight hours or longer. A dog should never be crated for the majority of the day and night, even if it’s not for longer than six hours at a time. This deprives the dog of necessary interaction and companionship with his family, and will result in psychological damage.

Most dogs come to love their pet crates. They like the privacy. They can just relax and sleep. And you have the peace of mind knowing that your dog isn’t getting into trouble or disturbing the neighbours.

At first, let your puppy or dog explore the wire crate without your closing the door. Place it in a part of the house where there’s lots of activity, such as the lounge room. It’s a good idea to feed your dog’s regular meals in the pet crate – with the door open at first, progressing to closing the door – to create a positive association in the dog’s mind. Work up to a point at which your dog is spending ten minutes, quiet and calm, in the crate after finishing a meal.

Next, get your dog used to spending time in the pet crate, with the door closed, for short periods while you are home. Guide your dog in with a treat, using a command like “Crate!” in an upbeat voice. If your dog is calm in the crate for 30 minutes or so while you are home, you can begin to crate him or her when you leave.

You should never let your dog out of the wire crate if he or she is crying, pawing at the door, or otherwise making a fuss. Wait for calm quiet; otherwise, you will be teaching your dog that making a fuss is the way to get the door to open. This often means waiting a bit after you arrive home before opening the door to the dog crate, because your dog will naturally be excitable at your return. This also sends the message that being in the crate isn’t just a home alone thing.

Even after your dog is fully housebroke n, your wire crate will continue to be valuable. You can use it in the car to keep your dog from distracting the driver, and keep her safe in the event of a collision. In the home, a wire crate can be used to confine the dog whenever you can’t watch her or to keep her out from underfoot.

Ingrid Newkirk, co-founder of PETA, on animal rights and the film about her life

Author:  |  Category: Uncategorized

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

Last night HBO premiered I Am An Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA. Since its inception, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has made headlines and raised eyebrows. They are almost single-handedly responsible for the movement against animal testing and their efforts have raised the suffering animals experience in a broad spectrum of consumer goods production and food processing into a cause célèbre.

PETA first made headlines in the Silver Spring monkeys case, when Alex Pacheco, then a student at George Washington University, volunteered at a lab run by Edward Taub, who was testing neuroplasticity on live monkeys. Taub had cut sensory ganglia that supplied nerves to the monkeys’ fingers, hands, arms, legs; with some of the monkeys, he had severed the entire spinal column. He then tried to force the monkeys to use their limbs by exposing them to persistent electric shock, prolonged physical restraint of an intact arm or leg, and by withholding food. With footage obtained by Pacheco, Taub was convicted of six counts of animal cruelty—largely as a result of the monkeys’ reported living conditions—making them “the most famous lab animals in history,” according to psychiatrist Norman Doidge. Taub’s conviction was later overturned on appeal and the monkeys were eventually euthanized.

PETA was born.

In the subsequent decades they ran the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty against Europe’s largest animal-testing facility (footage showed staff punching beagle puppies in the face, shouting at them, and simulating sex acts while taking blood samples); against Covance, the United State’s largest importer of primates for laboratory research (evidence was found that they were dissecting monkeys at its Vienna, Virginia laboratory while the animals were still alive); against General Motors for using live animals in crash tests; against L’Oreal for testing cosmetics on animals; against the use of fur for fashion and fur farms; against Smithfield Foods for torturing Butterball turkeys; and against fast food chains, most recently against KFC through the launch of their website kentuckyfriedcruelty.com.

They have launched campaigns and engaged in stunts that are designed for media attention. In 1996, PETA activists famously threw a dead raccoon onto the table of Anna Wintour, the fur supporting editor-in-chief of Vogue, while she was dining at the Four Seasons in New York, and left bloody paw prints and the words “Fur Hag” on the steps of her home. They ran a campaign entitled Holocaust on your Plate that consisted of eight 60-square-foot panels, each juxtaposing images of the Holocaust with images of factory farming. Photographs of concentration camp inmates in wooden bunks were shown next to photographs of caged chickens, and piled bodies of Holocaust victims next to a pile of pig carcasses. In 2003 in Jerusalem, after a donkey was loaded with explosives and blown up in a terrorist attack, Newkirk sent a letter to then-PLO leader Yasser Arafat to keep animals out of the conflict. As the film shows, they also took over Jean-Paul Gaultier‘s Paris boutique and smeared blood on the windows to protest his use of fur in his clothing.

The group’s tactics have been criticized. Co-founder Pacheco, who is no longer with PETA, called them “stupid human tricks.” Some feminists criticize their campaigns featuring the Lettuce Ladies and “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” ads as objectifying women. Of their Holocaust on a Plate campaign, Anti-Defamation League Chairman Abraham Foxman said “The effort by PETA to compare the deliberate systematic murder of millions of Jews to the issue of animal rights is abhorrent.” (Newkirk later issued an apology for any hurt it caused). Perhaps most controversial amongst politicians, the public and even other animal rights organizations is PETA’s refusal to condemn the actions of the Animal Liberation Front, which in January 2005 was named as a terrorist threat by the United States Department of Homeland Security.

David Shankbone attended the pre-release screening of I Am An Animal at HBO’s offices in New York City on November 12, and the following day he sat down with Ingrid Newkirk to discuss her perspectives on PETA, animal rights, her responses to criticism lodged against her and to discuss her on-going life’s work to raise human awareness of animal suffering. Tiffany Style And Stained Glass Lamps Are Collectible

Author:  |  Category: Structures

By Mike O’Brien

Considered one of the great contributions to the Art Nouveau movement, stained glass lamps have remained very popular. With a characteristic stained glass shade, Tiffany lamps became the standard for these beautiful light fixtures. Taking full advantage of the widening availability electricity, stained glass lamps are a great example of form following function.

Following the success of the original Tiffany designs, many other styles of stained glass lamps were produced. Though the term Tiffany is often used to describe stained glass lamps, there is only one Tiffany. The concept of a table lamp was not new in the late eighteen hundreds. Oil and gas table lamps had been in wide use by the time Thomas Edison and other inventors began marketing electric light bulbs.

The first Tiffany lamps appeared at the turn of the twenty century. Each lamp was made by hand and reflected the work of the individual artist. The base of the lamp was typically made of brass or bronze. It should be pointed out that several copies of a particular design were made but the lamps were never mass produced. Even though several copies of a pattern were produced, each lamp shade has a one of a kind feel imparted by the individual artist. Louis Tiffany gained experience in working with glass as a maker of stained glass windows. Working with pieces of scrap, he began to design lamp shades. He utilized standard methods of production that were used in creating stained glass windows.

Leaded stained glass is typically made from cut pieces of colored glass. A pattern would be drawn and cut then used to score and cut the individual pieces of the glass puzzle. The edges of each piece of glass would be covered in copper metal foil than soldered together. In the days of Louis Tiffany and until recently, lead based solders were used, hence the basis for the term leaded glass. Lead has been removed from most solders since lead is now considered a hazardous material. Once the soldering is completed, the joints would be cleaned and given a treatment. The treatment would involve applying a patina to the solder.

Tiffany lamps are characterized by several distinctive patterns. Some tiffany designs were based in the use of geometric shapes ranging from squares and rectangles to triangles and ovals. Tiffany also created beautiful floral patterns in a variety of shapes. Florals were often combined with some type of geometric pattern.

Cone shaped lamp shades are more difficult to produce. The pieces of glass were generally smaller than the glass used to make geometric shapes. The difficult task of creating a cone shape shade makes this class of Tiffany lamp more expensive and highly collectible. Not all of the shades produced by Tiffany featured a flat edge. The irregular patterns often came in a globe shape with edges that were irregularly shaped. The patterns were less geometric and more free flowing in design.

Regardless of which pattern it is, a genuine Tiffany lamp can fetch quite a high price. The highest price ever paid for a Tiffany lamp at auction is reported to be over eight million dollars.

For those of us who can not afford the high price of genuine Tiffany, there are some reasonable alternatives. There are lamp makers who offer reproductions of Tiffany patterns for a fraction of the cost you might expect to pay for the genuine article. There are some very high quality reproductions and original designs done in the Tiffany style by modern artists. It is common to see glass mosaic designs on some of the lamp bases.

If you fancy the idea of owning a genuine Tiffany lamp, it pays to do your homework. As with any type of collectible, there are many fakes and knockoffs of the genuine article. There are Tiffany knockoffs are very well made and will certainly fool an untrained buyer. Be certain to educate yourself about the unique qualities of genuine Tiffany before you commit to a purchase.

The rules of thumbs for making a superb presentation is to make sure

 1. You can grab your audience s attention; instead of boring them out of their minds and
 2. Create a presentation that can convey your messages clearly.

You have to learn how to use the space on each slide effectively, so don t try to put all information on one slide just because it fits. If you want to use graphics, such as a diagram or chart, make sure that it serves a purpose and one that can enhance the message you are trying to come across. Ultimately, you want to grab and hold your audience s attention from the get go without overcrowding the slides with so many information.

Grab the attention of your audience

Here s how you can make your presentation unique and unlike any other PowerPoint presentations out there.

 • Use a personalised themeAlso known as design templates, theme is a coordinated collection of fonts, graphic effects, and colours that you can apply to your slides with a single click. You can also use the same personalised theme on all your Microsoft Office documents, which will be good for branding. There are many built-in themes that you can use and personalise. You can easily change the colours, effects and fonts to make it more you, which you can then save as a new theme.
 • Use video and audioIf you want to convey your messages in a more effective manner, consider using video and audio in your presentation. It is also a good way to engage your audience more. You can insert a recorded narration or embed a video in your slide to keep the overall look of the presentation clean.
 • Use graphics to emphasise messagesLikewise, the use of graphics can convey your messages clearer, instead of just filling the presentation with mindless bulleted texts. You can create graphics and charts easily using the built-in feature of PowerPoint, as part of the Microsoft Office package. Just click on the chart icon to create a chart for your PowerPoint presentation.
 • Use transition effects and animationsThe key in using transition effects and animations effectively is to not overdo it. Only use effects to emphasise important points and make sure your choice of effect is consistent throughout the whole presentation.

Convey your information clearly

It is essential to keep the slides on your presentation consistent and professional. Here s how you can achieve it.

 • Create an outline of your presentationBefore you create your slides, it is recommended to take the time to create an outline of the presentation. This is a great way to help you create an effective presentation. When you are in Normal view of your PowerPoint screen, in the Slides pane to your left, just click the Outline tab and create your outline there.
 • Use slide masters to maintain the same look of the presentationTo create a professional-looking presentation, the slide master is your trusted friend. Formatting and layout that you create on the slide master will be automatically updated throughout the whole slide layouts in your presentation. Let s say you put the company s logo on the slide master, all your slides will then have the company s logo as well.
 • Use notes pages and handouts to help deliver an impeccable presentationIt is easy to get tongue-tied in front of a presentation, even when you already prepare some narration in your mind. You can avoid this situation by writing on the Notes pane, which appears below the slide. This is also useful if you want to put more explanation without overcrowding your slides.
