Disposal of fracking wastewater poses potential environmental problems

A recent study by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) shows that the oil and gas industry are creating earthquakes. New information from the Midwest region of the United States points out that these man-made earthquakes are happening more frequently than expected. While more frequent earthquakes are less of a problem for regions like the Midwest, a geology professor from the University of Southern Indiana, Dr. Paul K. Doss, believes the disposal of wastewater from the hydraulic fracturing (or “fracking”) process used in extracting oil and gas has the possibility to pose potential problems for groundwater.

“We are taking this fluid that has a whole host of chemicals in it that are useful for fracking and putting it back into the Earth,” Doss said. “From a purely seismic perspective these are not big earthquakes that are going to cause damage or initiate, as far as we know, any larger kinds of earthquakes activity for Midwest. [The issue] is a water quality issue in terms of the ground water resources that we use.”

Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is a technique used by the oil and gas industries which inject highly pressurized water down into the Earth’s crust to break rock and extract natural gas. Most of the fluids used for fracking are proprietary, so information about what chemicals are used in the various fluids are unknown to the public and to create a competitive edge.

Last Monday four researchers from the University of New Brunswick released an editorial that sheds light on the potential risks that the current wastewater disposal system could have on the province’s water resources. The researchers share the concern that Dr. Doss has and have come out to say that they believe fracking should be stopped in the province until there is an environmentally safe way to dispose the waste wastewater.

“If groundwater becomes contaminated, it takes years to decades to try to clean up an aquifer system,” University of New Brunswick professor Tom Al said.

While the USGS group which conducted the study says it is unclear how the earthquake rates may be related to oil and gas production, they’ve made the correlation between the disposal of wastewater used in fracking and the recent upsurge in earthquakes. Because of the recent information surfacing that shows this connection between the disposal process and earthquakes, individual states in the United States are now passing laws regarding disposal wells.

The problem is that we have never, as a human society, engineered a hole to go four miles down in the Earth’s crust that we have complete confidence that it won’t leak.

“The problem is that we have never, as a human society, engineered a hole to go four miles down in the Earth’s crust that we have complete confidence that it won’t leak,” Doss said. “A perfect case-in-point is the Gulf of Mexico oil spill in 2010, that oil was being drilled at 18,000 feet but leaked at the surface. And that’s the concern because there’s no assurance that some of these unknown chemical cocktails won’t escape before it gets down to where they are trying to get rid of them.”

It was said in the study released by the New Brunswick University professors that if fracking wastewater would contaminate groundwater, that current conventional water treatment would not be sufficient enough to remove the high concentration of chemicals used in fracking. The researchers did find that the wastewater could be recycled, can also be disposed of at proper sites or even pumped further underground into saline aquifers.

The New Brunswick professors have come to the conclusion that current fracking methods used by companies, which use the water, should be replaced with carbon dioxide or liquefied propane gas.

“You eliminate all the water-related issues that we’re raising, and that people have raised in general across North America,” Al said.

In New Brunswick liquefied propane gas has been used successfully in fracking some wells, but according to water specialist with the province’s Natural Resources Department Annie Daigle, it may not be the go-to solution for New Brunswick due its geological makeup.

“It has been used successfully by Corridor Resources here in New Brunswick for lower volume hydraulic fracturing operations, but it is still a fairly new technology,” Daigle said.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is working with U.S. states to come up with guidelines to manage seismic risks due to wastewater. Under the Safe Drinking Water Act, the EPA is the organization that also deals with the policies for wells.

Oil wells, which are under regulation, pump out salt water known as brine, and after brine is pumped out of the ground it’s disposed of by being pumped back into the ground. The difference between pumping brine and the high pressurized fracking fluid back in the ground is the volume that it is disposed of.

“Brine has never caused this kind of earthquake activity,” Doss said. “[The whole oil and gas industry] has developed around the removal of natural gas by fracking techniques and has outpaced regulatory development. The regulation is tied to the ‘the run-of-the-mill’ disposal of waste, in other words the rush to produce this gas has occurred before regulatory agencies have had the opportunity to respond.”

According to the USGS study, the increase in injecting wastewater into the ground may explain the sixfold increase of earthquakes in the central part of the United States from 2000 – 2011. USGS researchers also found that in decades prior to 2000 seismic events that happened in the midsection of the U.S. averaged 21 annually, in 2009 it spiked to 50 and in 2011 seismic events hit 134.

“The incredible volumes and intense disposal of fracking fluids in concentrated areas is what’s new,” Doss said. “There is not a body of regulation in place to manage the how these fluids are disposed of.”

The study by the USGS was presented at the annual meeting of the Seismological Society of America on April 18, 2012.

The Importance of Getting a Yearly Commercial HVAC Check Up

by

Mary Pierpont

Commercial heating and air conditioning systems need check-ups just like those in residences do. Waiting until HVAC equipment breaks down is not the best practice when it comes to keeping commercial and industrial units running smoothly. There are some commercial and industrial HVAC companies in the San Francisco Bay, Richmond and Oakland, CA areas that can help with these yearly maintenance check-ups. Wherever one does business, it pays to keep a close eye on equipment and get it serviced before breakdowns occur.

Often with the fast pace of business it is easy to forget to have equipment serviced. A breakdown could lead to lengthy down-time and a work backlog. Planned service can result in short down-time cycles and overall greater efficiency and longer life for heating, cooling and refrigeration systems. There s a lot to be said for finding a dependable heating and air conditioning service company. Some businesses use whoever is currently running a service deal, and if that s the case, then there won t be one company that keeps track of all of a firm s HVAC service history. Technicians will keep detailed records of each service call and the business owner can retain these to track the health of all of the HVAC units over time.

Once a business finds a reliable HVAC company, that company likely will offer several incentives to loyal customers. For example, if a firm gets a check-up on all of its systems, it may gain a discount on 24/7 emergency repairs or parts. Some HVAC companies have special deals that they email to customers so it pays to sign up for email alerts. Some of the discounts can be substantial and save businesses hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Maintenance plans are some of the best deals that heating and cooling companies offer because they are custom designed to keep a company s systems running through individualized service. While these plans cost a set amount per month or per year, they provide many advantages like priority service, 24/7 emergency service and discounts on parts and equipment. These benefits can be extremely valuable when heating, refrigeration or air conditioning units break down at inconvenient times, such as during a heat wave or over the weekend.

Many homeowners understand the value of getting their heating and cooling systems checked periodically. Business owners can acquire even greater value when they get yearly or even more frequent check-ups for their HVAC units. Signing up for service agreements can be the best option as then the business owner knows that all of the HVAC system components will be serviced on a regular basis. While it can be tempting to shop around for deals from whoever is offering them at the time, finding a reliable HVAC company to work with can result in customer loyalty discounts that really can add up.

Learn All About The Important Features Of Stamped Concrete

Author: Admin  |  Category: Granny Flat Builder

Submitted by: Pete Malcolm

Stamped concrete is concrete that is textured to resemble brick, slate, wood tile, et al. It is commonly used for patios, sidewalks, pool decks, interior decking and other flooring options. The capacity or ability of stamped concrete to resemble other building materials makes it much cheaper as a construction material compared to other building materials. There are three features about stamped concrete that should be considered before you make your final decisions about how and where you will use it in your home or business.

The Base Colour

Colour may be added to the concrete by two methods. The base colour is the primary or original colour of the concrete. This is also called the integral colour procedure where the entire volume of concrete is dyed with the base colour. Powder pigment is added to the concrete and also acts as a hardener. The concrete may also be coloured on the surface. The concrete is dyed using cast on colour or where the surface of the concrete is dyed with the intended colour.

Accenting Colour

This represents the second manner by which stamped concrete comes into fruition. The concrete contractor that you elect to perform all works of stamped concrete on your concrete blocks will advice you that in so far as accenting colour of a piece of concrete is concerned, accenting colour represents the secondary colour in a piece of stamped concrete and its purpose is to draw out the texture of a piece of concrete. This is performed by a technology referred to as colour release. Colour release has two purposes. It is a pigment and is used to colour the concrete with the pattern of the stamps. It is also used as a non-adhesive in that it prevents the concrete stamps from sticking to the concrete.

The Pattern

The pattern that is in the concrete is made by imprinting the concrete after it has been poured; the concrete stamps are ultimately the factor that is used to create the designs. Stamped concrete, apart from being rather relatively cheaper than other building material, has the advantage of being visually appealing. Which has the benefit of increasing the value of a property. It is also durable as a building material. For all of your stamped concrete projects enlist the services of a qualified stamped concrete contractor.

Using a qualified stamped concrete contractor will give you the following advantages over using a non-qualified contractor- they are a licensed artisan and consequently you can rely on the quality of their work. Secondly, these folk are schooled on the science and the art that putting up stamped concrete entails and consequently you do not get workmanship that is wanting in terms of quality. The last advantage that these folk bring to a job is the aspect of experience that essentially means that they are able to build upon their years on the job to ensure that whatever final package they come up with for you, you essentially get the best in terms of what the years have taught them.

Wednesday, August 9, 2006

A fire on Tuesday night at Southland Hospital, Invercargill has destroyed a two-storey building which was used for laundry and cleaning by the cleaning company Alsco.

Junior doctors and interns were evacuated from the nearby hospital campus. A dangerous goods store nearby nearby was saved from the fire. The building was not close enough to the new main hospital building to cause any damage to it.

Morris Robertson, Fire Chief, said: “We managed to save a dangerous goods store near the fire but the laundry is a total loss.”

Fire crews arrived at the scene at 9.30 p.m. (NZST) and Morris Robertson said that the building was well ablaze when they arrived. The first was so severe that they had to call in other firefighters to help, including volunteers. In total there was eight fire engines and 35 firefighters.

The fire was under control by 11.30 p.m. but the fire crews stayed overnight, just in case.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro injured in Preakness, does not finish race

Author: Admin  |  Category: Uncategorized

Saturday, May 20, 2006

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, sent as the post-time odds-on favorite in this year’s Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, breaks down in the opening stretch of the race, shattering any chance of a Triple Crown winner this year. Bernardini, the 12-1 4th choice out of 9, ends up winning this year’s Preakness, stopping the clock at 1:54.65. Following up 5 1/4 lengths behind was Sweetnorthernsaint, sent to the post at 8-1, and Hemingway’s Key at 29-1, six lengths further back.

According to Dr. Larry Bramlage, the on-call veterinarian for the American Association of Equine Practitioners, Barbaro’s injury was “significant” and “would require major stabilizing surgery.” Barbaro’s injury effectively ended the horse’s racing career.

Bernardini, a colt by A.P. Indy out of Cara Rafaela, by Quiet American, was bred and is owned by the Darley Stable of Sheikh Mohammed, is trained by Tom Albertrani, and was ridden to victory by Javier Castellano. Today’s Preakness marks the first Preakness win for jockey Javier Castellano, who previously rode Ghostzapper to a win in the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Classic. The Preakness was only Bernardini’s 4th career start.

Bernardini paid $27.80 on a $2 win bet. The $2 Exacta of Bernardini and Sweetnorthernsaint (8-7) paid $171.60, the $1 Trifecta with Hemingway’s Key in third (8-7-3) paid $1,956.40, and the $1 Superfecta with 2nd-favorite Brother Derek (8-7-3-6) paid $11,151.20.

NASA sets launch date for Space Shuttle Discovery

Author: Admin  |  Category: Uncategorized

Saturday, March 7, 2009

After almost two months of delay, NASA has set March 11 as the launch date for Space Shuttle Discovery. On February 22, NASA had stated that they indefinitely delayed the launch of Space Shuttle Discovery, which was originally scheduled for takeoff on February 12. Launch was then further delayed until February 25 before being delayed indefinitely on February 22. NASA cited the need for additional time to evaluate the shuttle’s hydrogen fuel flow control valves.

Liftoff is set for nighttime on Wednesday, March 11, at approximately 9:20 p.m. (EST) from Launch Complex 39A in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The official countdown to launch will commence Sunday, March 8.

“The team came through, worked hard and was efficient. It’s time now to step back and think of everything else we need to watch before launch on the 11th. There’s no better team than this one and I thank them for putting the right analysis together,” said Bill Gerstenmaier, associate administrator for Space Operations at NASA.

NASA wanted to perform additional tests on the valves which control the amount of hydrogen fuel pumped into the external tank when the shuttle is taking off before making a decision to launch. When Space Shuttle Endeavour went into space in November 2008, one of the valves broke. NASA fears that if one breaks off on this mission, then it could damage the outside of the shuttle.

The current scheduled mission, STS-119, is set to fly the Integrated Truss Structure segment (“S” for starboard, the right side of the station, and “6” for its place at the very end of the starboard truss) and install the final set of power-generating solar arrays to the International Space Station. The arrays consist of two 115-foot-long arrays, for a total wing span of 240 feet, including the equipment that connects the two halves and allows them to twist as they track the sun. Altogether, the four sets of arrays can generate 84 to 120 kilowatts of electricity – enough to provide power for more than 40 average homes.

Commander Lee Archambault will lead Discovery’s crew of seven, along with Pilot Tony Antonelli, and Mission Specialists Joseph Acaba, John Phillips, Steve Swanson, Richard Arnold, and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Koichi Wakata.
